Subject: Petition Urging Immediate Action on Unemployment Crisis for Qualified Teachers in KwaZulu Natal

We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the alarming increase in the number of qualified teachers facing unemployment in KwaZulu Natal. This critical issue is exacerbated by the overwhelming demand for educators in schools throughout the province, leading to overcrowded classrooms and compromised learning environments for students.

Despite the evident need for additional teaching staff, the government's response has been hindered by financial constraints, citing a purported crisis that has left many qualified teachers without employment opportunities. Moreover, the impact of the retrenchment process, particularly through the PPN (Post Provision Norm) initiative, has left numerous qualified teachers in limbo, waiting for the PPN to conclude before securing employment.

We bring to your attention the ineffectiveness of the current educator employment system, particularly the database used in KwaZulu Natal. Many qualified teachers have registered on the database for years without any success, raising concerns about the functionality and fairness of the system. Unlike other provinces, there is a notable absence of online advertisements for teaching positions in KwaZulu Natal, leaving aspiring educators perplexed about how to navigate the employment process.

As concerned citizens, we urge the Department of Education and the government to address this crisis promptly and decisively. The government, bound by a social contract with the South African people, has a responsibility to deliver on its promises, particularly in terms of job creation. The current situation calls for transparent communication regarding the challenges faced by the education sector and a commitment to providing permanent employment for qualified teachers.

We, therefore, respectfully request the following:

1. Immediate and transparent communication from the Department of Education and the government regarding the challenges faced in employing qualified teachers in KwaZulu Natal.

2. A comprehensive review of the functionality of the educator employment database in the province, with the aim of addressing its inefficiencies and ensuring a fair and timely recruitment process.

3. Increased efforts to publicize teaching vacancies in KwaZulu Natal through online platforms, district announcements, and school posters, ensuring that qualified teachers are aware of available opportunities.

4. A commitment from the government to prioritize the creation of permanent teaching positions, acknowledging the impact of unemployment on both qualified educators and the education system as a whole.

We believe that by taking immediate and decisive action, the government can alleviate the current crisis and fulfill its obligations to the citizens of KwaZulu Natal. We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to positive and impactful changes in the near future.
