Life sentence for the rape of 17 year old maiden.

On the 10th of September the province of Kwa Zulu Natal Celebrated its annual Umkhosi Womhlanga Reed Dance. However the day also became a life changing moment for 17 year old maiden.  Siboniso Dlomo (29) an educator and relative of 17 year old maiden Asanda Bhengu was asked to take her home after the reed dance, however on their way he viciously raped her.

According to research by the South African Medical Research Council South Africa has the highest rape rate in the world of 132.4 which is some 66.196 incidents in per 100 000 people.

In the first quarter of 2023 (Jan-March) Kwa Zulu Natal experienced an increase by 113 incidents as compared to previous quarter.  A total of 2130 reported cases.  The reality is that 40% of women will be raped in their lifetime  and sadly about only about 14% get convicted

In terms of the Criminal Law - Sentencing Amendment Act (No 38 of 2007) a regional court can sentence a person who has been found guilty of rape to imprisonment for life.

As Civil Society organizations we are calling for the maximum sentencing if Perpetrator is found guilty. However in order for that to be realised - we request case to be moved to Regional court where it can be trialed in accordance to the life changing criminal act emposed on 17 year old Ms Bhengu.

Our sisters and mothers deserve our protection and  the courts.

Their plight is our concern and we are enjoined to end their suffering and victimization. Crime against women is a crime against our humanity.

Crime erodes our values. It disempowers an integral part of our society and pillars of our existence as a people.

  • We demand justice for those brave women who call out for help.
  • We demand protection for victims of the violent acts.
  • We demand that the court act remedy the wrongs experienced by these women.
  • We demand that perpetrators of violent crimes against women be subjected to the full force of the courts.
  • Regional courts and and their enhanced sentencing powers are the appropriate forum for rape cases and other violent crimes against women.
  • We urge the that prosecutor's, Magistrates and judges acted in service of humanity and the countless victims of these abominable crimes.
  • Moving this case ensures that appropriate justice is given to our sisters. It will ensure that a strong message is sent to would be abusers. They will ensure that the trauma experienced by our sisters and mothers is given equal concern and respect.

Our names affixed below indicates that our resolve is supported by the community, our leaders and our nation.
