PETITION TO HAVE MUNICIPAL SWIMMING POOLS IN EKURHULENI REGULARLY MAINTAINED AND UPGRADED.

We, the swimming community of Eastern Gauteng Aquatics, the custodians of Aquatics in this district, hereby petition the City of Ekurhuleni to request an urgent hearing with the Petitions Committee, the Department of Finance and Department of Real Estate over the lack of maintenance and upgrades of our municipal swimming pools. 

The condition of pools in the City are in an unacceptable state. We therefore seek an audience with the committees, as mentioned to discuss a way to address these concerns in particular, the swimming pools of Delville and Boksburg North as these pools are used for regional, provincial and international swimming events. 

Noting, that the Boksburg North swimming pool is the only 50m metre indoor swimming pool in Gauteng, it is, however, currently closed.   

Some of the issues affecting the above-mentioned pools:  

Delville:   

1. Resolve, the contractual matter involving the heat exchange contractor. Current work on this project has stalled, affecting the operation of the pool.

2. The grandstand is needing a complete revamp in line with health and safety regulations.

3. Storm water drains need regular cleaning to avoid flooding of the pool. 

4. Bathrooms need a complete revamp.

4.1. Including the repair to the damaged sewage system. 

5. Flood lights need to be repaired as currently only 8 of the 40 work. 

6. Resolve the constant illegal dumping and burning of refuse in and around the grounds.   

Boksburg North:  

1. The HVAC system needs to be repaired. 

2. Regular maintenance of boilers and heat pumps needs to be undertaken. 

3. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the parking facility. 3.1. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the pool grounds.

4. Perimeter fencing requires attention.
