Reopen the Vending Machines During the School Day

We, the students of BHS, request that the school vending machines be accessible throughout the entire school day.

Currently, the vending machines are shut off during school hours, despite the fact that the Ala Carte line—another place to purchase snacks—is available before school, during lunch, and after school. If students are allowed to purchase snacks with lunch money from Ala Carte during the day, there is no reason the vending machines should be treated differently.

In fact, vending machines offer several advantages:

• Convenience: Unlike Ala Carte, vending machines don’t require lunch money tied to a parent’s Skyward account. Many students may not have funds readily available through the lunch system, but could use cash or card at a vending machine.

• Accessibility: Not everyone has time to stand in long Ala Carte lines, especially during short passing periods. Vending machines provide a quick alternative.

• Revenue: Keeping the vending machines running during the day could actually increase school profits, benefiting the school as a whole.

• Student Wellness: Having access to snacks throughout the day will benefit the students greatly by increasing their performance.

For these reasons, we believe it would be best to allow vending machines to remain on and accessible during the school day.
