We need to preserve the green space in our neighborhood for both enjoyment and wastewater management to prevent flooding into the bay.Shelley Watson (Sarasota, 2023-02-17)

When I first moved here I knew it as a green space and would take my small children to explore it. When the house to the north was bought, I was exploring it with my small child and the neighbor to the north threatened us to leave claiming it head her property. I knew this was not true.Sean Oneil (Sarasota, 2023-02-17)

This area was specifically designated as a storm water runoff conservation parcel. Taxpayer dollars via a SWFTMD Grant were spent to develop this resource. We cannot forget this.David Jennings (Sarasota, 2023-02-17)

Marlin Conservation Square was dedicated with the intention of storm water run off, native plantings and green space for all of the neighborhood. Many of us with young children enjoyed it often after it opened as it is the only natural park in our entire neighborhood. All of these can be still achieved without giving public land to benefit two private property owners. Many neighbors have come forward to remedy the adjacent neighbors complaints, and bring Marlin Conservation Square back to life, for all to enjoy.Jana Hoefling (Sarasota, 2023-02-17)

• Marlin Conservation Square plays an important role in our neighborhood’s admittedly inadequate stormwater runoff management system. The City is in no position to be giving away public land that helps alleviate flooding on our neighborhood streets and yards.• The City, State, and neighborhood have invested time and money in improving MCS as both a stormwater runoff management tool and as a public greenspace. Don’t throw away these investments by giving the land to two private individuals for development.
• One argument made by the adjoining neighbors is that the land has not been properly cared for. That situation is largely as a result of their own actions (or inaction). Neighbors, supported by the IBSSA, stand ready to maintain the area; privacy and security concerns can easily be addressed through installation of a fence.

I am signing because our house backs right onto Marlin Conservation Square and we are severely affected by the water flooding from houses on Eastchester Drive and Eastchester Drive itself and houses behind and as far as North Tamiami Trail. Brywill Circle gets very flooded but so does our garden and land around our house. At times, it is like a river on both sides of our house.Margaret Barbieri-Webb (Sarasota, 2023-02-20)

I am signing this petition because I do not want to lose Marlin Conservation Square. This little slice of nature has positively served our community for over 2 decades. We have a very serious water run-off problem on Brywill (just west of the subject site). The water run-off catch-basin incorporated within Marlin Conservation Square is a critical component to slowing down the flooding we see on Brywill Circle. We suffer greatly on Brywill, even during the smallest rain events. We can not allow the City to take Marlin Conservation Square from our community!Denise Scheineson (Sarasota, 2023-02-20)

The green spaces in IBSSA including the Marlin Square are an important part of our neighborhood and need to be preserved. Our favorite activity is walking our dogs in our lovely neighborhood and these green spaces are oases and nice cool destinations to visit on our walks .We enjoy Hegener trail, Marlin Square and the waterfront parks and they are what makes IBSSA unique and special. Please don't give these away.Barbara Cook (Sarasota, 2023-02-20)

I do not like the idea of people taking public land for their own personal use instead of the benefit of the community.Nkechi Obi (Sarasota, 2023-02-20)

My late neighbor, Charles Hegener, warned of this happening almost 20 years ago. In his memory (and because of his determination) the Charles Hegener Nature Walk exists today as a “pocket park” in our neighborhood. It is a wonderful tribute to him. My hope is for a similar fate for the property at Marlin SquareDiane Thornberg (Sarasota, 2023-02-20)

Marlin Conservation back directly onto my home. It is important that this land remains a stormwater / Conservation area to help eliminate the flooding problem that we have in Brywill Circle and the surrounding area. If this land is to have houses built on it, it will cause greater damage due to the increased amount of floodingIain Webb (Sarasota, 2023-02-24)

Since becoming aware of the proposed Vacation of Marlin Conservation Square by the two adjoining neighbors, I am convinced that this request should be denied. Should this small piece of public owned land be transferred to become private property, it will only be a matter of time until yet another 6,000 + square feet of our neighborhood will be covered over. in non-permeable concrete and water now captured and absorbed into the ground will run South into Brywill Circle and beyond.John Barnett (Sarasota, 2023-02-27)

This right of way that has been planted w/native plants and used as a greenspace is important for our neighborhood's health and appeal. it helps with stormwater runoff--and our storms are fierce! it also helps preserve the natural habitat that makes people want to live in Sapphire Shores. Because the neighborhood is built out as single family homes, it's much more appealing and has a high quality of life.Miriam Wallace (Sarasota, 2023-02-28)

I wish to preserve this important environmental space. It was created as a storm water sink for Marlin Drive. We still need the storm water abatement in addition to drains.Jane Shea (Sarasota, 2023-03-06)
#140
I have seen first hand the radically different outcomes when seasonal wetlands in our neighborhood are maintained or sold off for private use and development.I knew Dr. Ann Stillman, who worked for years maintaining the Marlin Conservation Square because she understood its value, as initially identified by the SWFWMD grant in 2000, as a demonstration of flood protection by means of natural systems. Twenty years later our neighborhood doesn't seem to have learned the lesson.
Leave Marlin CONSERVATION Square alone. If anything, we should be promoting it, running tours, as an educational resource.
