Bring Back Serrie!

Comments

#401

Every res worked too hard to not get the chance to go to finals.

(centurion, 2017-05-17)

#403

The issue was not students but outsiders making a big mess out of (yes, vulgar) signs, which were merely meant in a joking manner between the different residences and not meant to offend anyone specifically. We are young and yes we find vulgarity funny sometimes, just as any other human with a little humor does.

I am signing this petition because I have invested alot of time I serrie . we wanted to pass a message that can change someone's life for the better . we as first Years serrie is what made some of us want to come to res ,I loved serrie from way back and I told myself that i want to be parts of this Amazing event . this is the only place where you get a house coming together and strive for one goal and actually sticking together , by this I mean it's the only place where you get to free and enjoy that fun time wit the rest of your sister's . can we please have serrie back .

(Pretoria , 2017-05-17)

#406

Yeah, why not

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#413

Serrie is a wonderful tradition and every participant has been working really hard.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#419

Although the signs were disgusting and should not be tolerated, the dancers should not be punished for the transgressions of the audience.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#422

I am signing because as a Tuks Alumni who took part in the serrie tradition I know that it is one of the major posotive activities that establishes a sense of unity despite race, it nurtures mutual respect and admiration. It would be more than an injustice - it is what made Tuks unique.

(Windhoek, 2017-05-17)

#423

I was part of serrie last year and it was an amazing experience in which I will want other people to experience. The final vibe

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#424

I'm signing because serrie has always been part of Tuks and as a previous resident of Magrietjie I have grown to love serrie. It is unfair towards all the residences to cancel Serrie, they spent 3 months training every single week. This is unjust, unfair and cruel.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#426

It won't solve anything if the serrie is canceled. The people who had that signs are probably not even going to be watching the finals.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#427

I love serrie because it brings students together for a good cause. It really is our escape from the hectic varsity life.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

I'm a student and a serrie performer. I've worked countless hours and put my body through strain so that I could have the honour of performing in my residence's serrie this year. I loved every minute and have made lots of friends just from being in the serrie. It gave me opportunity to get to know the semis in the res and I BELIEVE IT WAS STUKUS RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE DEALT WITH THE PROBLEM BY PUTTING IN RULES ABOUT SIGNS BEFORE IT GOT THIS BAD AND THEY HAD TO TAKE SUCH DRASTIC MEASURES BECAUSE OF A FEW RADICALS WHO DIDNT EVEN DO SERRIE AND DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT IT WAS ABOUT OR FELT THE HARD WORK THAT WE PUT INTO EVERY HOUR OF PRACTICE
I DIDNT GIVE UP 100 HOURS OF MY SEMESTER FOR STUKU TO HAVE WASTED MY TIME. OUR COSTUMES WERE DAMN EXPENSIVE TOO, IF STUKU CAN CANCEL, THEY MUST BE PREPARED FOR REFUNDS THANKS.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#433

Traditions.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#442

Serrie is amaZing !!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#449

I am part of the Boukenhout Serrie2017 and I feel that it's not fair of Tuks to cancel serrie after every participant sacrificed their time just so that they can cancel in the end.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#450

The decision to cancel Serrie is a kneejerk reaction and a thoughtless reaction. I of course do not agree with what was written on the posts, however the situation was handled incorrectly. To take away hours and hours of preparation from the residences/day houses' only for UP to cancel the whole event together is very unfair. ECs have spent months figuring out numbers, attire, moves, flips, formations, etc. To build the ultimate Serrie that they can possibly muster. All that dedication, and it takes one post for all of that to get eradicated.

Look, I think that there could have been better ways of handling this situation. Aside from the photos in that (now notorious) post, those aren't the only people with these distracting comments. The onus is on the residences' ECs to make sure of what is being said and displayed, and policing it when necessary. It's your job as an EC to make sure of this.

The relevant residences' could instead be disqualified from Serrie finals, in order to nail this point through for future events, and then work from there. But the decision to remove Serrie completely, is bogus and totally unfair.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#453

Canceling serrie is unfair to all who have worked for hours and hours !

(Johannesburg , 2017-05-17)

#454

This is an injustice to ALL of Tuks students. It is part of STUDENT CULTURE, REGARDLESS OF BACKGROUND, LANGUAGE OR RACE.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-17)

#464

The road to #Serrie2017 Finals must recommence

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#468

I have done serrie before . I know all is done in good spirit . If we had a problem with the comments put up during the show we would have done something about it amongst ourselves as res students . We chose to participate knowing that the guys would think of comments to pull our souls out , not becuase they ment it .

Please stop just listening to the extremist that posts a few things and get alot of attention . Go deeper , go see what the heart of serrie really is about .

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#472

This was taken out of context and part of propaganda of minority groups not even part of UP. Please stop actings punishing the wrong poeple.Rather investigate and take actions against guilty individuals.

(Centurion, 2017-05-18)

#475

Because of a few students stupid comments everybody have to suffer now, we worked 3 months!!!!!!! Paid money!!!!! This is not fair

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#478

It must come from bith sides !!! Girls were also writing harffull thing to guys.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#485

So much hard work has been done by all the people involved - why punish them for the actions of a few.

(Johannesburg , 2017-05-18)

#488

The stupid things a few guys wrote should not stop Serrie. Don't punish the contestants because of the crowd! I was there. I performed and I saw a few of these signs, yet I didn't feel threatened of offended!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#492

Serrie is part of TUKS's tradition!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#498

I am part of Serrie. I have spent countless hours on practicing for Serrie. We have worked so hard! I feel as though the wrong people are being punished for this!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#499

Serrie is what we all work hard for and look forward to every year

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#502

I'm signing because it is unjustifiable to cancel a huge event for the university just become some "journalist" has a bias opinion that had to be announced. We all have opinions and we should all have a say when it comes to Serrie

(Pretoria , 2017-05-18)

#507

I believe that all students and schools need some forms of gees to help build unity amongst the students etc. Don't take away the people element or the fun.

(Pretoria , 2017-05-18)

#510

I want Stuku to bring back Serrie finals!!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#512

I am part of a serriegroup and this is my first serrie, since I'm a first year, it is bad enough that jool was taken away and that and serrie were part of the things I was excited about to be in University! They can't just change our student life and experience like they please! Bring serrie back!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#513

I'm signing because Serrie shouldn't be used as the scapegoat for the universities wrongdoings

(Marble Hall, 2017-05-18)

#514

The sexism against the girls were unacceptable. Hope the guilty ones get the punishment they deserve. I feel sorry for the innocent girls that worked so hard. They have not only been the victims of sexism but also injustice.

(Louis Trichardt, 2017-05-18)

#515

Cancelling Serrie isn't going to solve the problem. It's just sweeping it under the rug.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#518

A formal apology can be made by all the male residences and if they know the consequences of their actions - they won't ever make signs like that at Serrie again. Please reconsider!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#520

I want to have serrie finals. It means a lot to me and taking it away made me sad.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#523

I'm signing because of all the hard work I put into our Serrie. I am signing because of all the funds that had to be raised to have this serrie. All of this could not be for nothing.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#524

Serrie is healthy competition between resses and because we have worked way to hard not to have a Serrie Final

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#530

Hours of practice deserve some finality

(Plettenberg Bay, 2017-05-18)

#535

Serrie is a tradition that needs to be kept it allowed me to get to know seniors better

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#536

It is unnecessary to take serrie away, I am not stating that rape culture is insignificant because it very much significant. All I mean to say is that taking away serrie is not a move towards addressing effectively or efficiently.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#537

My children put in MANY hours of hard work which will all be in vain. They deserve better leadership from the UP.

(Pretoria , 2017-05-18)

#538

The university can't just up and cancel all the fun things just over one incident. Serrie has been running for years and it is just a spirit lifting event in the midst of all the exam prep chaos. It's a shame to remove something that has fostered so many precious memories and friendships. If the university is to take away anything that could possibly be a source of controversy, UP will soon be just a lifeless place filled with overworked robot nerds who have nothing other than books to keep them company. Bring back serrie!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#544

I love serrie and I was also in the serrie this year, it was so much fun

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#546

Too much went into Serrie for us to throw it away

(Pretoria , 2017-05-18)

#549

Ek dink die mense is onregverdig om die serrie mense wat 3 maande geoefen het net te kansaleer in die week waar die finale rondte sou wees

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#554

Bring back serrie

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#566

I'm mad about serrie and me and the rest of the Madelief serrie girls excercised our butt of for 4 months for finals and now it's cancelled by people who don't even do or appreciate serrie!!! All our hard work goes to nothing about posters , which by the way everybody do, and the girls who serrie knows it and don't care!!! UP you will not get away with just cancelling our hard work !!!!

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#567

It is a crucial part of TUKS culture. We can't allow this to be taken away.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#568

I took part in Serrie 2015 and feel robbed of my time, energy, effort, marks and money. Cancelling finals is treating a symptom, not the cause

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#576

Serrie should not be taken away from us - it's a highlight of the year

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#579

Im a res student and I love serrie

(Pretoria , 2017-05-18)

#580

I want the university management to bring back the serrie

(Mmotla, 2017-05-18)

#582

I'm singing because it makes me proud to be in my hostel and bond everyone in the hostel together

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#584

Serrie is a tradition not a advertisement, BRING IT BACK!

(Pretoria , 2017-05-18)

#586

Only the guys were targeted, but this is something that has been present for many years, and should be delt with internally before taking things out of perspective. None of the people involved seem to have a voice, this is unequal treatment, allowing people to blatantly target certain individuals, and leaving others be.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#588

We worked so hard just to get a change to participate in finales, serrie is the only place where I don't need to worry about my studies and release my stress. Serrie finals is a show for everyone to watch and gives an opportunity for those who couldn't watch the prelims.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#590

I'm a participant in serrie, and I feel that it's incredibly unfair to just up and cancel finals because of things that the SPECTATORS did

(Klerksdorp, 2017-05-18)

#592

Culture should be celebrated, not destroyed. Tuks makes me sick

(Pta, 2017-05-18)

#593

Taking Serrie away does not solve the issue of rape culture and disrespect within the university milieu. It only serves to sweep the issue under the rug and not actually deal with it. Serrie is a very important unifying activity within residences and is not the root of the issue.

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)

#597

Serrie is important to build relationships between res members and have cultural

(Pretoria, 2017-05-18)
