GHAPS Petition for Parental Notification & Consent for sexually explicit materials for minors

Comments

#2

As a parent, I want to be notified prior to by school officials, if there is explicit or sexual content in any books that any minor will be exposed to.

Rachel Miller (Grand Haven , 2020-03-12)

#3

I'm signing because if someone who cares for their own child doesn't draw the line in the sand... who's job is it to even draw a line?

Stephanie Kline (Spring Lake, 2020-03-12)

#4

Our children DO not need to be exposed to this.

Jessica Mastbergen (Spring Lake, 2020-03-12)

As a grand haven alumni I have been so disappointed to see this issue stay around for so long. The school board, librarians, principals, and teachers should have acted IMMEDIATELY to remedy the graphic sexual novels available to these children. I tried reading one of the books available to the kids and became too sick to my stomach to continue. I’m extremely disappointed, Grand Haven used to be a great school. Now they are bowing down to false idols, indoctrination, early sexualization, and leaving parents out of the decision. Parents are fed up, the community is fed up. Time to pull the kids out, what could be more important than their innocence and their souls? GHAPS has lost the trust of the people.

I do not want my child to have to process sexually explicit (pornographic) or LGBTQ material without my consent. Nor do I want them to be able to access it without formally checking it out in the library (read it without my consent within the library or classroom). Thus it needs to be in a secure location.

Lisa Toth (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

#9

I think it’s deplorable to have graphic content in book format available to the kids. If you wouldn’t/ couldn’t show a video of it in school what makes it ok to put it on the shelves to spur them in that direction. It’s school not the public library.

April March (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

My son goes to Grand Haven and I want to be informed

Amanda VanBogelen (Muskegon, 2020-03-12)

#12

As a parent/grandparent we should be the decision makers in what we want our kids/grandkids exposed to!

Jennifer Sorber (Spring Lake, 2020-03-12)

#13

I'm signing because my child should not have to read about this. What if this has happened to a child. Why should they be reading something that can give them PtSD.

Autumn Holmes (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

#14

Kids should not be exposed to porn at any school age.

Kristi Rice (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

#16

I’m signing this because I believe it in inappropriate to give minors sexually explicit material.

Cindy Biller (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

#17

I do not think sexually explicit materials belong in school libraries. If the school administration insists on having them as part of their collection, then as a parent (charged with the responsibility of protecting my children) I absolutely demand the right to be informed, and be required to give my permission in writing, before my child can view or check out sexually explicit materials. P.S. the fact that we need a petition for this issue is disappointing, creepy, and crazy.

Jennifer Thompson (Spring Lake, 2020-03-12)

#18

these books should not be available to children this age!! GROSS

Haley Thrift (grand haven , 2020-03-12)

#20

I have children in the district. I support this because my children as young as they are, are avid readers. I don't want these books in the hands of my children.

Amanda Shreve (Norton Shores, 2020-03-12)

#21

I am in favor of implementing a consent form and protecting my child from the public school's immoral policies. I no longer have confidence in the wisdom of our public school administration, nor have confidence they can protect my child.

Todd Harrison (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

#22

I agree with the content and fully support parental rights.

Melissa Dykman (West Olive, 2020-03-12)

#29

I'm signing because some of these books are disgusting for anyone under 21 to read.

Manda Podein (Grand haven, 2020-03-12)

#32

My opinion is that this is the minimum that GHAPS should offer. There is absolutely no reason why these books need to be on the shelf in the first place. If parents don’t have a chance to give consent PRIOR to our children reading these very graphic books, our children may have already read them by the time we see that the book is in their possession.

Denice Grambush (Grand Haven, 2020-03-12)

#42

Public school has no business teaching our children this filfth

Jennifer Ostrowski (West Olive, 2020-03-12)

#43

I’m signing this petition because tax funded schools do not have the right to dictate what gets taught to our children.

Molly Himtz (Grand haven , 2020-03-12)

#45

I want to be informed and to limit my children’s ability to obtain explicit material.

Karen Chapel (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#46

I believe the sexually explicit materials openly presented to public school students through the sex education program(s) and through reading material presented in class violates them (the student), their innocence, their parents and the trust of the tax payers who fund the schools in the first place.

Kristina Stickney (Allendale , 2020-03-13)

#47

There is no reason for books with sexual content in a middle school library.

Trish Adsit (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#51

parents desire to determine whether a child's emotional and neurological development are at an appropriate level to process conflicting, disturbing or confusing material.

Barbara Goff (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#56

I'm signing because it's time our schools, starting right here in my home town, are held accountable for irresponsible decisions, apathy, and/or ignorance.

Theresa Giacalone (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#57

I believe in protecting the innocence of children for as long as you can. I don't believe any child of any age should be desensitized to sexual abuse of any level due to literature that make it appear as acceptable conditions.

Shannon Carrington (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#60

I agree 100 percent with this. My daughter is currently in 5th grade and even though some parents are ok with their child reading materials like this I am not. My children do not need to be introduced to this matter especially through their school. These books shouldn't even be an option for these young students. It needs to be regulated better and by opting out with a permission slip the school will need to pay attention to whose hands these kinds of books are getting in.

Christen Avalos (Grand Haven , 2020-03-13)

#61

I am signing this for my 3 children.

Jessica Borgman (Grand haven, 2020-03-13)

#63

I am signing this because it is absolutely disgusting to ever thing sexually explicit material is ok for a child

Tasha Lakatos (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#67

Young people need guidance as they become young adults.

Edward Hatt (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#68

Our children are already having to grow up too fast and are exposed to too many mature/disturbing things in this world. There is no reason that a child needs access to this type of material at school, or anywhere else for that matter. It is disgusting to know that this type of thing is so easily available to them.

Marissa Milligan (Spring Lake, 2020-03-13)

#70

This is filthy and immoral!

Diane Chrzanowski (Grand Blanc, 2020-03-13)

#75

Our family’s previous experience of highly inappropriate behavior, yet “not illegal” by school employees toward our student have not been dealt with appropriately, causing us to remove our child from the district. Grand Haven administrators and staff members need to be held accountable in how they interact with students and how they educate our students. As stated previously in parental/administration discussions AND surveys...”the lack of dealing appropriately with situations of bullying and inappropriate interaction between staff and students starts at the top”. I am signing this petition to support the efforts of getting the attention of the Grand Haven school district to let them know, as a taxpaying parent, we will not tolerate them allowing our children to be exposed to sexually explicit material without parental consent.

Deborah Westerman (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#76

books are inappropriate.

jenny cook (Hamilton, 2020-03-13)

I dont think it's right for children to be exposed to books like this.

They’re to many issues the NEA are pushing in the classroom that are not in line with our family values

Rich Dawkins (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#83

I payed taxes and my three children attended school in the Grand Haven school district. We pulled all three from the district because the district stopped working with us just before all three were diagnosed as Celiac. I have friends and family whose children attend GHAPS. It is immoral, unethical, and, illegal to allow and present sexually explicit material to children. GHAPS should be working with and not " fighting with" parents and taxpayers to come up with a reasonable resolution. It seems that GHAPS has lost touch on working with families and is more concerned about their own agenda and funding. Expect more families to turn to other educational options, as I did, unless you start working for and with families.

David Hollar (West Olive, 2020-03-13)

#84

This is pure evil doing this to these young innocent children

Kathy Pernicano (Melvindale , 2020-03-13)

#85

It’s disgusting that this petition is even needs to exist! Leave our children alone!

Brianna Smith (Grand ledge , 2020-03-13)

#87

I'm signing because it is dangerous to students and ridiculous that this type of content is available in the school libraries.

Larry Vanderroest (spring lake, 2020-03-13)

#88

Porn in schools not a good thing

John March (Grand haven, 2020-03-13)

#94

If one goes to a Family Video store there are better standards, as these types of material are kept in a separate area, safe from the eyes of children. Shouldn't the schools do a better job to protect children? It is unacceptable and unnecessary. Sexually explicit material is harmful to children. In fact, it is evil.

Karen Fritzemeier (Muskegon, 2020-03-13)

#95

I find it disgusting that the material discussed is available to young vulnerable children. These kids are our future! Please help protect them and form their moral compasses!

Nicole Lietz (West Olive, 2020-03-13)

#98

is a permission slip really that much to ask?

Renee Kemp (Grand Haven, 2020-03-13)

#106

This is NOT ABOUT gay, straight, bi, etc. etc. etc.,like some would like you to believe. This is about disgustingly inappropriate SEXUAL material available for our kids to get in ANY K12 SCHOOL LIBRARY! School is about a SAFE place for learning reading, writing, arithmetic and history. It is not the schools job to teach my kids about sexual things, that is my job and my right as a parent. It is disturbing to me that the GH School Board is not even willing to notify parents of these disgusting books and to have a SIMPLE consent form for the parents of this district, that pay the taxes for this school. I 100% agree with Jennifer Stuppy.

Tami Zahl (Grand Haven, 2020-03-14)

#111

Sexual content for children in middle school adversely affects their growth.

Brian Knoper (Grand haven, 2020-03-14)

#115

Shame on the school board for not acting on this right away. Shameful we need a petition to try and prove parents have a say in the upbringing and morality of their OWN children. Schools, you DONT own these children and shame on you for fighting these parents. Everyone should just pull their kids, their trustworthiness has been proven.

Ryan Adams (Fruitport, 2020-03-14)

Because I am my child's parent, not GHPS. They are to educate my children about facts regarding history, math, music, any good pursuit. I and only I am qualified to teach my children about sex, and sexual activity.

Titus Shaffer (Grand Haven, 2020-03-14)

#132

Children of this particular age group and lower do not need access to this type of material at school.

Sabrina Vickers (Grand Haven, 2020-03-14)

#137

I am a grandma with grandsons in the GHAPS. I can't imagine this disgusting trash being available to them, especially at school! Aren't the schools supposed to be protecting children? They did when I was young!

Rita DeCan (Norton Shores , 2020-03-14)

#151

All parents should be aware of what the teachers are telling students about moral matters the discussion needs to begging at home!

Lori Scouten (Brooklyn, 2020-03-14)

#153

I’m signing because it’s a parents responsibility and choice in exposing their children to these graphic books if we cannot balance the information being taught. It should not be taught if we can’t promote conservative values than liberal values should not be promoted either.

Krista Nykamp (Grand Haven , 2020-03-14)

#155

Books with any such material even remotely close to the examples above should NEVER be available to children. We need to be able to trust the schools our children attend.

Natacha Valmont (Fremont, 2020-03-14)

#159

This is not right!! Who are these people trying to sexualize our kids?? It’s enough that this is all over the media..but come on school is supposed to be a safe place for our kids!

#161

I am a concerned grandmother.

Joann Sanscrainte (Allen Park, 2020-03-14)

#163

I'm signing this because it's the right thing do and because kids deserve the best-- they deserve to surrounded by things good, true and beautiful. There are so many other options. Parents are trusting the schools to do the right thing. Video games, DVDs and cinema's have ratings to protect children -- if you can't send a child to see an R rated movie, then no book in a school library should have the same content.

Helen Mantooth (Hudsonville, 2020-03-14)

#171

I have family and friends who have children in the GHAPS district. These books are inappropriate and should not be allowed in children's schools.

Todd Carl'a (Grand Haven, 2020-03-15)

#175

This is child abuse by government force and the mental brainwashing is in no way appropriate for these kids.

The kids do need the corrupt minds of perverted, sick, insane, bizarre adult lifestyles, at any age in school especially very young.

The twisted individuals initiating and performing in this manner of lifestyle, are mentally demented and not for to teach or be around young minds.

Wtf is this even allowed in schools?? It must be stopped now.

John Picket (Muskeon , 2020-03-15)

#177

I believe children do not have any business being exposed to this kind of illicit garbage.

Andy Bergman (Twin Lake, 2020-03-15)

#181

There is no legitimate reason that any minor child should ever be exposed to such explicit content. It is mind boggling that the school district even allows books with sexual content within their libraries. I was appalled when I saw the material that a minor child is able to obtain on their own at a place where they're supposed to be safe. In my opinion there shouldn't even be an option for parents to "give consent" or "not give consent' for their child to read explicit sexual content, it simply just shouldn't be available.

Jacqualin Maggio (Ferrysburg , 2020-03-16)

#183

Sexual education is the parents responsibility not the teachers.

Anna Evilsizor (Marana, 2020-03-16)

#184

I am signing because I wish to protect all children from sexually-explicit and all other inappropriate material that should NOT be in our public schools. Parents are, of course, free to share this material with their children in the privacy of their own homes and to have the requisite discussions to help them understand the contextual and other factors needed to appreciate the literary value of these passages and the works themselves overall. This is not a question of free speech, book-banning, or morality but rather one concerning the protection of children, all of whom should be allowed to just be children. Innocence is fragile and once broken, can never be restored... Please help protect our kids because they cannot protect themselves. Thank you.

Jeff Miller (Grand Haven, 2020-03-16)

#185

I believe in this cause and that parents should decide what is best for their kids!

Angela Bush (Norton Shores, 2020-03-16)

#188

Parents should be aware of notified as to what their children are reading. They are responsible for their child’s education and have the authority to determine what their child reads.

Kevin Moore (Grand Haven, 2020-03-16)

#191

I believe there should be parental approval for minors to be able to read sexually explicit books. Or a rating system on books, similar to movies and video games. I do NOT want banning of books, just parental approval.

Tanya Payette (Norton shores, 2020-03-16)

#192

As an elected member of the CIty of Ferrysburg city council I am in support of this motion requiring GHAPS to provide parental notification and to get their consent prior to exposing and/or providing sexually explicit materials and instruction to minors.

Grand Haven was our school district of choice. We believed Grand Haven was the best fit for our son, safety being of utmost concern. Please help other parents keep children safe by allowing parents the right to consent or refuse to allow their children access to this material.

I believe the content in some of the books contained within the school district libraries is not for children to be seen or read without proper guidance and restriction/permission from their parents/guardians.
