STOP the informal settlement, housing of criminals and drug lords in our National Heritage site - Strand Street Quarry

I’m signing because crime has increased dramatically as the informal settlement has grown. A number of drug deals have gone down on a regular basis and people have been injecting heroine outside my house. There are also no sanitary facilities, electricity, sewage etc making this unsuitable for a human settlement.

Kirstin OSullivan (Cape Town , 2020-06-28)

#7

I am signing because I own property in De Waterkant and I want to feel safe in my neighborhood.

Grace Harrison (Cape Town , 2020-06-28)

Having lived in close proximity of the quarry for over 20 years, the increase in crime, noise, visible drug use, vagrancy, litter, the continuous knocking on my door and harassment has increased significantly in the last year.

Andrew Matterson (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

#11

Crime has increased and people have been injecting heroin in the area since the settlement started and increased

David Adams (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

#13

Camping in the quarry is not a sustainable solution. It puts the whole community at risk.

PETER BATEMAN (CAPE TOWN, 2020-06-28)

#17

I live in Dewaterkant and I am concerned about the safety as well as the depreciation of the area.

ROTEM SHACHAR (CAPE TIWN, 2020-06-28)

#21

I am signing because crime is on the increase in the Bo-kaap and the kraal is used as an storing place and drug pedaling

Wahab Ahmed (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

#22

I want a crime free society for my children

Shadikah Achmat (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

I would like to support zero tolerance for illegal occupation and activities.

Andrew Broome (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

#25

I’m signing because my son was attacked and mugged by someone armed with a knife in BoKaap who ran back there. My son photographed him in the street later, took it to the police who acknowledged they Know him, that he lives there in the camp but nothing was done. It has to stop now.

Steve Harley (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

#26

It has been a crime hub for years and have been trying to convince the city for years. Action is always promised but it never happens
The strand street quarry is not enough, the « Kraal » next to it is also linked to the problem

Yoann Nicolas (Cape Town , 2020-06-28)

#28

Not safe to live here

Ursula Boutry (Cape Town, 2020-06-28)

#30

I’m signing this because I’v seen first hand the crime.

Michel Boutry (Cape Town , 2020-06-28)

I would like to see this matter attended to as a matter of urgency.

These pop-up plastic/cardboard shacks should not be erected in a Heritage area, public pavement, centre road island, in shop doorways, etc. CT is a major tourist destination, and SA relies very heavily on the revenue which tourism adds to the economy as well as creates tens of thousands of desperately needed jobs. The vagrants who occup these garbage littered shacks harbour criminals, so-called car guards and beggars, many of whom are aggressive and most involved in crime. Numerous International tourists have been attacked and robbed while walking up this section of Strand Street from the City towards Green Point by these criminals living in the quarry area. SAPS have confirmed that a huge percentage of the house and car breakins and muggings of residents and domestic workers in Green Point are perpetrated by these criminals in the quarry area. Finally, there are excellent shelters for the homeless people in this area where they can get meals and a bed but many prefer to live on the street so they are free to commit crime. It is enshrined in the SA Constitution that we citizens are entitled to be protected by
SAPS and Law Enforcement against crime and attacks by criminals but this has been ignored.

To preserve this historic site and De Waterkant

#38

Impacted resident of De Waterkant.

Garth Psaradelis (Cape Town , 2020-06-29)

#40

We are sympathetic towards the homeless yet the activities that take place by many of these individuals are crime related and as such need to be curbed and as the Quarry / Kraal area is left unmanaged and / secure - alternative use for the area should be initiated for the benefit of the community

Marc Truss (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#41

We are being harassed on the street as we walk to the shops.

Gill Minikin (Cape Town , 2020-06-29)

Resident at 72 Loader Street. I have been mugged once already from people ‘living’ there!

Matthias Hartmann (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#50

Feel for my safety and that of my guest staying in our city.

James Irving (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#51

Absolute disgrace that this has been left to deteriorate like this for years and years despite our continued efforts to halt it. Muggings on Strand street are a common occurrence. It's a regular route for tourists down to the city and they have to pass this slum and be in danger. It is unacceptable.

Aissa Parenti (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#54

I care

Shenine Botes (Cape Town , 2020-06-29)

#59

The Quarry is a crime hotspot and the muggings / burglaries / attacks along Strand Street and the Atlantic Seaboard is totally out of control. People are paying huge amounts in rates and the filth coming from the quarry when the wind blows, not to mention the Human ablutions in the streets, on the curb... the health issues, drug dealings, prostitution... unsightly structures that have been erected in an area where residents are forced to pay huge rates. I would like action taken ASAP!!! I have fought this battle for over SEVEN years and all we have got back is lip service with false promises.

Catherine Gibson (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#63

This settlement is having a very detrimental effect on the area as well as tourism.

Jonathan Cousens (Cape Town , 2020-06-29)

#64

Good day I signed as these people need to be given shelter in government shelters where they fed , are warm and taught skills. What about the old TRADE schools ... use them to house them and train them .
There informal structures are bringing our property values down.

E Kilzer (Cape town, 2020-06-29)

#65

I am working in the area and it is affecting my physical as well as psychological well being. As local and national tax payer I am contributing to the protection and law enforcement expenses.

Karen Lategan (Cape Town , 2020-06-29)

#66

We cannot allow lawlessness to take over this country.

Brian Paddey (Port Elizabeth, 2020-06-29)

#68

Crime is rampant. Daily attacks on pedestrians. Nightly break ins. Criminals are hiding in plain sight in the informal settlement

Louise Knepscheld (Cape Town , 2020-06-29)

#81

The deterioration of the jewel of CPT from Zonnebloem to Campsbay is shocking. Settlements everywhere and the authorities just let it be? The quarry is a huge source of crime judging by the night time traffic passing my home with head lights peering into cars and the increase in crime.

Annie Lo (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#82

This land invasion is dangerous.

Geoff Tregaskis (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#88

I am affected by this situation.

Fadielah Galvaan (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#89

This affects tourism as it's a main drive through from the City - it's at the entrance to the City - it's prevents guests walking safely to town which foreign visitors love doing (walk everywhere)
It's unhygienic
It's dangerous
ITS ILLEGAL OCCUPATION OF LAND which has carried on for years now
It's going to become a squatter camp
It will destroy property values and proper rates will be lost to the City
It's a mess
Thank you

Ughetta Parenti (Cape Twn, 2020-06-29)

#90

I want to ensure that we have a safe environment without drugs, thefts and other criminal activities.

Morten Gade (Cape Town, 2020-06-29)

#91

Drugs have damaged so many relationships and lives . The quarry has become a hotspot for dealers and users. It is time the government steps up to the plate and work on a solution for the homeless. Only on election days these people’s lives matter to the government . On the day they receive sandwiches and a cold drinks. After they have voted ( they are told what to vote)). they are forgotten. Disgrace !!!!

Beatrix Laubscher (Cape town, 2020-06-30)

#95

Because I believe in preserving our national heritage sites and in law and order. Whilst I sympathize with the homeless and the shortage of affordable housing in SA, if we allow squatters to creep in, we are on a slippery slope to illegal activities and loss of investments.

Tania Hamilton (Cape town, 2020-06-30)

#96

To remove all illegal settlers and drug lords from the kraal, and all the vagrants from the bokaap area

Hawa Ahmed (Capetown , 2020-06-30)

#98

I believe there are solutions if local and national government works together

Corieda Kotze (Cape Town, 2020-06-30)

The criminals acting as homeless are the biggest threat. The village is being targeted due to the lack of unoccupied homes because of to the pandemic. It's an sad and desperate situations The CID will soon, not be able to handle this growing issue.

Kris Rossouw (Cape Town, 2020-06-30)

#103

We can not have criminals and drug lord inhabitants in our National Heritage sites

Stephen Munch (Cape Town , 2020-06-30)

#107

It is about time the vagrants, illegal immigrants and people that don't belong there are moved off and the area made safe for law abiding people and tax payers to feel safe and be able to use the space more effectively for all.

Terence Ellis (Cape Town , 2020-07-01)

#109

I have been living in the area for 33 years and the criminal activity and element is worse than ever before.

Howard Martin (Cape Town, 2020-07-04)

Julie Friedman (Cape Town, 2020-07-20)

The crime is out of control around the quarry and law abiding citizens are not safe walking in the area. Criminals are using that as there haven

Luanne Lascaris (Cape town, 2020-07-21)

#131

The site needs investment and improved safety.

Oliver Noth (Cape Town, 2020-07-21)

I have been reading on a daily basis the escalating concerns and incidents of crime surrounding the Quarry and Strand St. Something has to be done! It is putting me off of visiting that area of town and I’m sure that sentiment is shared with many others.

Nichola Dos santos (Seapoint, 2020-07-21)

#135

the crime in that area is getting out of control, something drastic has to happen and it has to happen now.

lue apteker (cape town, 2020-07-21)

#139

Allowing the informal settlements to establish themselves creates crime, unsanitary conditions and stress on the residents and security services. It is deeply unfair to rate paying residents to have their safety and daily lives jeopardized so unnecessarily

Nick Adcock (Cape Town , 2020-07-21)

#140

Enough is enough! I am tired of being harassed and scared to walk around my neighborhood! Shut the quarry down! I am not unsympathetic, but these people don’t belong here. They have travelled in and made themselves displaced in the city.

Leigh Hendricks (Cape Town , 2020-07-21)

#141

Crime in this area has reached an epic proportion. Without intervention the situation will only deteriorate.

Toni Venter (Cape Town, 2020-07-21)

#153

The quarry has a lot of criminal elements and people get attacked and robbed going past there constantly

Ada Neale-shutte (Cape-town, 2020-07-21)

#155

Clear the space of all inhabitants and utilize it to create a safe community space for everyone. It is mind blowing that this current situation has continued to escalate with little to no police intervention!

I have personally been a victim of a mugging on signal hill. Was resident of sea point. Police took. Me straight to Quarry to alsee if assailant was there. He ran straight in that direction after assaulting me, a woman who offered no resistance. He took everything. He looked like he could have been very high.

Our beautiful City and Country is becoming a crime invested squatter camp.

Steve Uppink (Cape Town , 2020-07-22)

THIS QUARRY HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM.
COUNCIL CAN DO SO MUCH MORE BY MAKING THIS SITE INTO PARKING PAYING AREA.
NEED I SAY MORE.

Denise Smith (Cape Town, 2020-07-22)

#174

I am signing because it is a health and safety hazard. Please take action immediately.

MARYNA KRUGER (CAPE TOWN, 2020-07-22)

#177

Safety of residents and visitors has become a huge problem in the area. Crime has escalated and it is absolutely unacceptable that people are so at risk in an area where there seem to be hard core criminals in the midst of us. The quarry needs to be shut down.

Mnandi Bestbier (Cape Town, 2020-07-23)

#181

I don’t feel safe in my neighbourhood. I can’t walk to the shops, I always feel unsafe parking my car outside my house.

I feel sorry for the homeless people but it is not a situation that I can resolve. The City of Cape Town must resolve this issue.

It is very difficult too for our international guests. I always have to apologize when I explain how dangerous it is to be walking around top of town and Green Point.

I also feel very upset that our beautiful city is now filthy, unsafe, with aggressive begging and piles of washing hanging all around.

There MUST be a solution.

Cape Town has been voted the most beautiful city in the world. Let’s take action to make sure that it’s reputation is restored!

Rosemarie McClean (Cape Toen, 2020-08-11)

#182

I am tired of feeling scared walking in my neighborhood! I'm sick of criminals ruling the streets. Every week someone is mugged in Strand street, threatened with knives and guns. Then run off into the quarry only to commit the same crime again. We pay inflated rates for what? Nothing is being done.

Michele Barfoot (Cape Town , 2020-08-11)

#184

The muggings, brutal attacks, drug trafficking and invasion of people's privacy and fear must stop now
