Keep UC Students, Faculty, Staff, and All East Bay Residents Healthy and Safe

I am concerned about the increasing community spread of COVID-19. & I agree with the Yale professor who likened dorms to cruise ships on land. UC should not fully open until 2021.

Carla Woodworth (Berkeley, 2020-07-12)

I have a science background. Harvard is doing something like this.

Peter Barglow (Berkeley, 2020-07-12)

I am signing as a resident of Berkeley, age 86 and have already found it difficult to maintain my safety from the virus when I walk on the street anywhere in my neighborhood, south of campus. most young white men from campus DO NOT WEAR MASKS and seem not to care at all for anyone but themselves. Enuf. time for the city and the university to take responsibility for the residents that live in this city.

Sheila Goldmacher (berkeley, 2020-07-12)

#10

I am 82 years old and my age makes me especially vulnerable to Covid-19.

Martin Schiffenbauer (Berkeley, 2020-07-12)

#12

I agree with everything in this petition. I want the Berkeley Council to go on record as to whether they support this petition. There is nothing more important than this issue.

stuart lichter (berkeley, 2020-07-12)

#21

It seems that som young people have developed a kamakaze attitude toward life in these times. Unfortunately their frustration high jinks place is all in danger.

Simi Litvak (Berkeley , 2020-07-12)

#22

I am concerned for my life and my health. I am over 70 and have co-morbidities. It is premature to have university students return for the fall semester. They pose a threat to me and everyone who lives in this community.

Mara Carman (Berkeley , 2020-07-12)

#25

I am almost 79 and am afraid of fraternity and sorority members whose background of privilege translates into confidence that only other people are vulnerable to Covid 19 and only the potential victims have a responsiblity for keeping themselves safe.

Peter A h (oakland, 2020-07-12)

#26

As a vulnerable senior, I'm particularly concerned about the significantly increased risk in-person classes would bring into our community, as well as to the students and staff.

Marilyn Kaplan (BERKELEY, 2020-07-12)

#32

I am witnessing the surge if cases on campus due among other things to fraternity parties.

I am 74 tears old and live with great care in Berkeley.

Barbara Gates (Berkeley, 2020-07-12)

#34

The current "spike" in COVID-19 cases is being driven by younger people - age 20-40. One identified cause is failure to wear masks and socially distance. Bringing students back to the U.C. Berkeley campus at this point, without an adequate way of policing compliance, is an invitation to disaster.

Stuart Flashman (Oakland, 2020-07-12)

#35

Health and safety of students, staff and faculty comes before all else. We can hang in there for some months longer until we have Covid-19 sufficiently under control for students to return to campus.

Amy Gorman (Berkeley, 2020-07-12)

#42

I believe we should do everything possible to limit business-as-usual until the virus is under control.

Linda Lancione (Berkeley, 2020-07-12)

#49

We have to stop the spread of this virus now; it can't just keep spreading endlessly. Many people, especially young people, have acted irresponsibly, oblivious to their capacity to spread the virus to more vulnerable people, even unwittingly.

Martha Naomi Alt (Albany, CA, 2020-07-13)

#51

I'm signing this because I'm a senior resident of Berkeley (51 years here) and, if I contract this damn virus, it'll probably kill me.

David Esler (Berkeley, 2020-07-13)

#52

I believe that returning students to the UC Berkeley campus for the Fall, will endanger the Berkeley residential population and university employees, as well as those living in surrounding towns. I believe this should not be allowed, and hope that the Berkeley City Council will take strong action to prevent this.

Walt Odets (Berkeley, 2020-07-13)

#53

Adding 30,000 plus students to Berkeley and the East Bay is a recipe for disaster for them and the people who live here. We're not Floriday yet, but we could be very easily. Wait until things are under better control. I write as a citizen/resident and retired community college professor.

Mark Greenside (Alameda, 2020-07-13)

#60

I want to protect the health of staff & students

Margaret Janosch (Oakland, 2020-07-13)

#64

I'm signing because the health and safety of everyone in the Berkeley/Oakland area will be jeopardized if UCB students return to campus in the fall. The increase in the numbers prove it. Please conduct classes online.

Sylvia Mullally (BERKELEY, 2020-07-13)

#65

I considerthe public health of the residents of Berkeley to be far more important than the economy of this community.

Helane Zeiger (Berkeley , 2020-07-13)

#77

concerned for myself and the health of the community

Richard Bermack (Berkeley, 2020-07-13)

#80

As an older resident of Berkeley(I’m 74 years old), I see daily the careless behavior of many young students who live in my South Berkeley neighborhood. Developmentally, young people in their twenties still lack the necessary ability to make good judgement calls consistently. Please keep UC closed until we get this virus under control for all of our sakes.

Laurie Baumgarten (Berkeley, 2020-07-13)

#84

too many people don't wear masks and ignore guidelines.

myra kaplan (oakland, 2020-07-13)

#85

david anderson (oakland, 2020-07-13)

#87

I have many close friends at UC Berkeley who are international students. Sending them away endangers them and their family and damages the trust they put in this country.

Andrew Sharo (Berkeley, 2020-07-13)

#88

Staying alive takes precedence over the desire to go back to normal.

Beverly Thiele (Berkeley, 2020-07-13)

#89

I'm signing because I don't think it's possible to keep both the University and surrounding community safe enough right now, while the virus is surging, with no containment in sight. It's too soon to open the campus to students. Social distancing amongst students will be nearly impossible to maintain. It's akin to asking them to be abstinent from sex - unrealistic and unlikely. I live near campus and have observed students socializing in groups without masks; I can imagine it would be hard to refrain from socializing or studying in close proximity behind closed doors. Students, faculty and staff will all be exposed to more virus and all will circulate in the wider community - everyone will be at increased risk. Please follow the lead of other universities and keep the fall 2020 semester online.

Karin Pfluger (Berkeley, 2020-07-14)

#90

I live near campus and have compromised health issues

Susan Shawl (Oakland, 2020-07-14)

#91

I'm an elderly longtime resident of Berkeley, I was a staff member at UCB for many years, long ago, and I love UCB. I want to protect everyone there and in my beloved city and surrounding area. Risky behavior will prolong and exacerbate the pandemic, making us all worse off than if we exercise more caution for a while now. Consider how New Zealand is now--corona-free--and follow its example, please.

Zipporah Collins (Berkeley, 2020-07-14)

#92

I think they should work online this coming semester. But I do not want the foreign students to be harrassed by ICE.
So Foreign students should be allowed to attend online here in the United States.

Aster Tadesse (Oakland, 2020-07-14)

#93

The last thing we would want would be the gathering of a crowd of 40,000 students plus staff on a daily basis with little or no control over movement , keeping distance, and wearing of masks.

Ned Pearlstein (Berkeley, 2020-07-14)

#94

I am high risk.

Ed Tannenbaum (Crockett, 2020-07-14)

#97

I've already seen too many students not social distancing or mask wearing and this will further increase the spread of the novel virus.

judy Keene (Berkeley, 2020-07-14)

#99

It's is entirely fool-hearty to have on site classes until there's a reliable and readily available vaccine for COVID. Berkeley is incredibly dense. Students are notoriously immature when it comes to wise health decisions, and are likely to infect the rest of us, many of whom are 60+. Shopping at the Berkeley Bowl is already hazardous! Do not invite students back to Berkeley when their learning can be done online. It's irresponsible!

Julia Chervin (Berkeley, 2020-07-14)

#101

I'm concerned about schools opening too early. Once the curve is flattened, different ideas could be considered,

Hali Hammer (Berkeley, 2020-07-14)

#102

I am worried for UCB students as well as all residents of the overall East Bay community ( especially Berkeley Albany, and Oakland where many UCB students live

Lena Chervin (Oakland , 2020-07-14)

#106

I'm signing this petition because it's irresponsible for UC Berkeley to put young people and faculty's lives at risk.

Jeanne Nader (Alameda, 2020-07-14)

#108

Please keep everyone safe especially our seniors and those with health issues

Margaret Barbee (Oakland, 2020-07-14)

#116

Common sense

Ed Monroe (Berkeley, 2020-07-16)

#117

It’s the only reasonable response to start containment of the virus.

Melinda Simons (Orinda , 2020-07-16)

#118

I agree that this is the safest course to follow, given the disastrous lack of common sense exhibited by the UCB Frat houses.

Mel Harte (Berkeley, 2020-07-16)

#119

I'm 77, healthy so far, want to protect neighbors, students and other workers, hoping that students can learn online for a short while.

Audre Newman (Berkeley, 2020-07-16)

#120

Because of the recent rise in Covid 19 cases in Berkeley and because the students at CAL will come back from various locations and because some of the younger population conduct themselves business as usual(no masks, frat parties, etc., I urge UC to use online classes for the vast majority of classes and reduce the student population as much as possible.

Nancy Tieburg (Berkeley, 2020-07-16)

#121

Too many young people aren’t taking this seriously and we live close enough to campus. I don’t want this added risk and worry.

Lyndsey Fry (Berkeley, 2020-07-16)

#126

I live in Berkeley, and have seen how well we are doing as a city against the virus. Given the number of fraternity members and athletes at UC who have been confirmed positive in the last few weeks , making Berleley's numbers spike, I believe that bringing back students to UC will cause harm to the students, the faculty and support staff and Berkeley in general. Please keep students off campus until we have this virus under control.

Pamela Frantz (Berkeley, 2020-07-17)

#128

it's clear that the students need parental guidance in these difficult times. we see students infecting themselves at a high rate by not following the health laws and we see UCB is not willing to step up and act as substitute parents. instead they claim that they can't fulfill this role.

kayla garelick (berkeley, 2020-07-17)

#129

I care about keeping people healthy and particularly not dying to the extent feasible.

Irene Rosenthal (Berkeley, 2020-07-17)

#131

Rising case numbers, caused to large extent by student illness, not only may endanger non-student residents and university staff, but also cause hardship to local businesses which may have to close due to high coronavirus numbers. Online classes seem like a legitimate compromise.

A. Boersma (Berkeley, 2020-07-17)

#135

coronavirus

Nandita Barkandaj (Rajbandh, 2020-07-18)

#138

I want us all to be safe.

Eileen Adams (Berkeley, 2020-07-20)

#139

The recent spike in cases at UC Berkeley and around the county indicate this it is not safe to have students return to face to face classes. This virus spreads too easily and our vulnerable populations (Elderly, in or out of facilities, people of color) - people who would likely die of complication, shouldn’t have to bare increased deaths.

Thalia DeWolf (Berkeley , 2020-07-20)

#141

Berkeley should focus on getting the residents of Berkeley’s students back into the classroom before U C Berkeley students should come back. If schools for the residents are not safe to be conducted the uc Berkeley students should not return.....

Sheila Moran (Berkeley , 2020-07-20)

#144

I am
Concerned that the students will not act responsibly.

Gail Tennant (Berkeley, 2020-07-22)

#148

I'm a UCB alum, retiree and long time Berkeley resident who cares very much about all members of this community.

Michele J. Bernal (BERKELEY, 2020-07-25)

#151

I want to keep Berkeley safe.

Barbara Freeman (Berkely , 2020-07-26)

#152

Most students will return even with no in person classes. 20000 to 30000 students will come to Berkeley with little to do (except socialize and party). Berkeley will be entirely responsible for these students
Online only will just drive students off campus.

Henry Gehman (Berkeley, 2020-07-26)
