I had the absolute pleasure of being a Graduate student that found this club. It was a great way for me to connect with a new community all while participating in activities that helped boost my health and wellbeing both physical and mental. Discontinuing this would be a grave injustice to our future batches.

I was on the NYU Rowing team from 2010-2013. Coming from a lower socioeconomic status, NYU’s rowing team was the only opportunity I had to participate in the sport despite a lifelong interest it it. While on the team, I learned invaluable skills like time management by balancing the 6 days a week 5am practices with my class schedule and a part time job. I learned the value of teamwork. I gained lifelong friends—many I still see even a decade after graduating from NYU undergrad. Since graduation, my experience on the rowing team has been a significant factor in building relationships during interviews and at work. Looking back at my time at NYU, my fondest and most profound memories of NYU are inextricable from my time on the rowing team. I wish that future generations can benefit from the supporting, fun, and hardworking community that I was welcomed into.

Hello, I was a big part of this team during my undergraduate studies and became the assistant coach after I graduated. We worked very hard to build and expand the program. We rowed out of the Maritime facilities and used a trailer as a boathouse knowing one day the dream of having a true boathouse would come. I understand that Covid hit NYU hard but there is rebuilding that can and should be done. Rowing is an amazing sport. You should look at making this a varsity sport, not dismantling this program. Look at the other local universities with rowing teams in D2 and D3. Why is NYU not a part of this? Further, NYU is particularly poised to be a part of bringing diversity and equity into the sport, an aim of many teams and the US Rowing team.

I attended the Head of the Passaic race last year and was happy to see the team in action and see the beautiful boathouse. I hope to see them again this fall.

Please reconsider this decision. This is a team worth your time and investment.

I was on NYU Crew from Fall 2017 - Fall 2018 and rowed in the MV4 at the Head of the Charles Regatta during freezing rain and battering wind.

It might not seem like it now, but NYU Rowing changed the lives of generations. It created friends for lifetimes, inspired people to get in shape, and is capable of creating great rowers and hard workers for life. Not only should this team be saved, but it should be made a varsity sport and given much more funding. Dear NYU Admin “Rowing is an investment, and it will pay off.”

I had the privilege of being on NYU’s rowing team in 2018 and had it made my last year at NYU extremely memorable. This sport helped me not only with staying fit but also helping me become more social in a school where it was easy to stay home and focus only on homework.
I really hope that NYU can reverse this decision and allow this fantastic club to continue bringing people together to stay fit, compete for NYU, and make lasting memories.

NYU Rowing has been an integral part of my college experience for the past two years both for community and athletic competition. Discontinuing the team would take away students' access to rowing when many would not have been able to start or continue the sport otherwise.

Discovering rowing at NYU not only led me to create some incredible friends and personal relationships, it taught me to how to push myself in all aspects, and how to persevere. It allowed me to discover what my body could do when I was focused, disciplined, and dedicated. Taking that option away from future students breaks my heart and I hope this decision is reversed.

Having rowed from 2015-2019, it was an integral part of my college experience at NYU and really helped me in finding my way during those four years. Thanks to the team I am now also rowing abroad in new countries and with new teams and would never have done that were it not for joining the rowing team as a novice and learning the sport at NYU. It’s amazing that the club sport exists because there’s no other place that makes it as accessible as this.
I really hope that club sports will reconsider and allow the rowing team to continue with their good work.

As an individual who values tradition, community, and the wide-ranging benefits that sports bring to students' lives, I am signing this petition. I believe the NYU Rowing Club not only represents a storied history, but also provides invaluable opportunities for students to learn teamwork, discipline, and resilience. Discontinuing the club would deprive future students of these opportunities and would also signify a loss to the NYU community as a whole. Let's stand together to keep the legacy of the NYU Rowing Club alive.

I was an NYU rower from 2007-2011 and it was one of the best parts of my college experience. We also had to fight to keep the program alive, and, as an alum, I am incredibly disheartened that NYU is trying to discontinue a team that has existed for over 100 years. This team is a not only a beautiful tradition, but provides a space for students to grow their sense of community and identity. NYU Crew has the strongest of support from this alum and proud rower!

NYU Rowing was the first space I felt like I could be myself, my escape from the city, and my family when I was at NYU. I never felt welcome on a Crew team until I came to NYU - club sports are such an important space especially for sports like rowing with such a high cost to entry.
It helped my get my first job because the interviewer was impressed about the dedication it takes to get up early every day and the commitment and team work it involved. Aren’t those all attributes NYU would love their alumni to have?

I'm signing this petition because I can't imagine New York University (NYU) without its Rowing Club. I hold very precious memories with the club whereby we built strong relationships with our coaches and team members. Every prestigious university, especially in the United States, has a history with rowing as a sport in some way or form. NYU has in fact been maintaining their rowing club for over 100 years. It would be ridiculous to discontinue it after all these years. It would very be an insult to the memory of every student that has worked tremendously hard to be apart of the club. The club only just recently obtained access to the much-awaited brand new boathouse shared with PRRA, as well as a new coach. It would not make sense, nor would it be wise, to stop the university from allowing its diverse and large community of students to ever row again.

Rowing is a fantastic single-person and team sport that requires discipline, dedication, commitment, and endurance. It's a sport that exercises a total-body workout. It's also a social sport, and thus the camaraderie that is built can most definitely be life-long. It's one of the few sports that can build such character on top of all the physical attributes it brings. If you're looking for an intense and competitive racing sport that is physical demanding, then rowing is the sport for you. Conversely, if you want to see what it's like to be on the water with like-minded individuals and remain recreational, then rowing is also for you.

The rowing club at NYU accommodates for all levels. I've never come across a more welcoming and friendly environment than at NYU, and this is with the context of rowing in 3 different countries.
This is a big plea as to not discontinue the NYU Rowing Club. This would be a huge mistake.

NYU Rowing was an amazing experience for me. I played on the NYU Varsity Volleyball team from August 2015-September 2016 and never felt a sense of belonging or friendship and completely lost my love for the sport. When I stepped away from Volleyball, I missed having a team and something to work hard for and that's when the captain of NYU Rowing reached out to me. She taught me how to row even though I'd never been in a boat. I'm grateful to this day of what rowing taught me. If it wasn't for NYU Rowing, I wouldn't have gotten to row on the Charles, I wouldn't have the friendships it created, I wouldn't be who I am today because of how the sport challenged me to be better and that it's never too late to learn. This is the last program that deserves to be cut, I'd donate money myself to help save this program.

Please reconsider this decision. I graduated in 2000 and rowing at NYU was a defining part of my life. Having the experience of leaving the city early morning to row off of the SUNY Maritime dock with my best friends was part of why I love NYU. A huge part.

I learned perseverance and was able to push the limits of what I was capable of. I learned team work and developed a strong work ethic. These are all skills that have helped me throughout my life and career. 23 years later, I still credit the NYU Crew Team as one of the largest influences in my life.

Don't get rid of something this special.

I was a part of the NYU crew team from 2010-2015. First as a rower and then as a coach. Saying this team was important to me would be an understatement. When I came to NYU I didn’t even know rowing was a sport. It certainly wasn’t where I grew up. I signed up for the interest meeting because I saw a flyer in the dorms and it looked interesting. After that the team became my family and community. At such a large university it can be hard to find community; the crew team made it easy. Crew in particular has a great feature of forming bonds not just between a team at large, but also even greater bonds between people rowing in the same boat.

Beyond that the team provided me with more life skills than I can list. I can confidently say that without the crew team my undergraduate experience would have not been even half as valuable as it was. I considered myself very lucky to be at a university that provided me that opportunity and I hope that students for years to come will have that same opportunity.

Missy Mende (Bergenfield , 2023-07-21)

I was part of the team between 2010-2014 and it was one of the most impactful and cherished aspects of my time at NYU. Growing up in an immigrant household, rowing was not a sport that was financially accessible to me, so the chance to be able to participate in the club team was an amazing opportunity. Joining the team came with not only the space to grow as a rower, but also a close-knit community of fantastic people, a way to maintain my mental health throughout undergrad, and important life skills that I still carry with me.

The semesters I spent rowing at NYU were easily the best of my college experience. I got to learn a sport I never would have otherwise tried, met some of my closest friends, and learned so much about what being on a team truly means. NYU Rowing has had such a big impact on those who participate--getting rid of the program would be a disservice to the university and sports communities.

Samantha Cockroft (Hershey, 2023-07-22)

Rowing gave me a community in a very large school that could often be lonely. Compared to our peers we were often underfunded but scrappy, and would beat teams like Army (West Point) with a boat full of dedicated and passionate liberal arts queers. If you can’t keep the team for the kids who found themselves waking up for 5am practices and winter gym sessions then at least recognize NYU cannot really be a peer of the great academic institutions of this country without a crew team. You have the funds.

I am an NYU alum (class of 2018) and was a 4-year athlete at NYU. I was a member of the NYU rowing team and experienced some of the most profound spiritual, social, and foundational moments of my life. The rowing team, the demand + discipline of it, teach us things that school alone can’t equip us with. Not only that, but the opportunity of being a part of rowing culture affords students incredible access to potentially life-altering relationships. The prestige and exclusivity of the sport makes it a premier activity that only select people get to experience. End the NYU rowing team would severely limit ways for students to experience NYC and NYU.
