As a teacher I work with many children who need to war glasses but won’t because of the stereotypes that they carry. I think Teddys positive smile emoji is better

Noone should be reduced to a thoughtless caricature. And noone should *ever* have to endure *any* kind of social stigma, because of intelligence or the look or sound of intelligence. Anti-intellectualism is one of the greatest mostly unaddressed scourges and plagues of our world. Here, we have an opportunity to address it, at least a little. Are there other issues going on? Yes. Is that a good excuse to ignore this one? No. Every tiny bit of our doing the right thing helps. Noone is an emoji, and both smart *and* just generically glasses-wearing people already go through and have to put up with far, *Far* too much.

Tim Jones (Seattle, 2023-12-02)

Melinda Dixon (Auckland, 2023-12-02)

#1482

I also wear glasses and there is no proper emoji for people with glasses, the emoji makers are working on making emoji's for disabled people but people with glasses only have this: 🤓

Nelly Wals (Amsterdam, 2023-12-02)

#1492

It’s offensive and could be used for social media bullying of young girls and boys. Itprovides a tool that can be used on them as an easy target - time to celebrate smart kids not pick on them

Rob Macgregor (Auckland, 2023-12-02)

I wear glasses & was bullied for it as a child so I find the buck toothed emoji offensive. I would never use this emoji as it would hurt someone’s feelings to be represented like this. So called geeks are sensitive & feel different enough without being made fun of in this way.

Laurie Wilson (Whanganui, 2023-12-02)

Young people trying to navigate the world and their friendships are having a rough enough time doing so that if this emoji has a chance of making them insecure about wearing glasses (a device that makes the world accessible for people who don’t have great vision) because of the assumptions made by others based on this emoji, then it should not exist. The word “nerd” itself has been used to bully and taunt people for decades as a means to devalue the intellectual abilities of others and put people down for their interests or abilities. This young man is brave enough to bring to the attention of many how offensive he finds it and Apple should listen to him and change it to the more positive emoji representing a genius.

Thank you,

Amy Parnell (Berlin, 2023-12-02)

#1576

Teddy is right. We shouldn’t assume people who wear glasses are “nerds” and/or they have severe dental misalignment. It’s 2023, time to change. People who use prescribed eye wear, who dedicate themselves to high education or provide expertise on a topic, and those who get judged for having oral bone structures deviated from the standard beauty, should not feel categorized as one, as their intersectional identities do not necessarily equate to one another. Teddy is right 👍
