I live on Gull street and feel very sad to lose this right of access. Walking down to the water through the trees is a unique experience that should not be the exclusive right of any one person.

In terms of NEMA, all South Africans should have access to the coast. This should apply particularly to existing paths that historically have been open to all, allowing residents and visitors to access, in this case, the lagoon. It is extremely irregular to sell of paths to landowners who wish to “own” the lagoon and coast and prevent the public from using it. This is elitist and unconstitutional.

I live in Sedgefield and I find it unfair that Gull Street is being sold to a private individual, without due process being followed, thereby denying access to a pathway to a beautiful view through the Milkwoods.

Charlene Blacker (Sedgefield, 2023-12-30)

I believe that people should be able to walk freely on footpaths and that it is not right for one person to develop over one, so that no-one else can access the path.

In terms of the Coastal Management Act and the Knysna SDF, public access to the lagoon has to be safeguarded.

I am signing as I feel the greater and general public have a right to access the lagoon as it is public domain. Private ownership of this section of land will no longer make that possible.

Susan Griffiths (Sedgefield , 2024-01-01)

Public access of this nature should never be closed. Everyone should be able to access our natural resources with ease. A community stays healthy when the people can access and enjoy the natural environment. It is one of the gifts of living in this area. Do not take it away.

Jane Kennedy (George, 2024-01-01)

I believe the Municipality is pursuing the sale of property because it is bankrupt and not because it is in the public interest. The. Closure of access will be irreversible. Access to the lagoon is a right that is enshrined in law via the NEMA legislation and the Municipality is aware that what it is doing is highly questionable but is pursuing their objective in any case. It is important that Kynsna Municipality and other similarly rogue municipalities learn that they cannot act against public interest.

It is supposed to be in the public domain, and the Knysna municipality is just selling because they need money to enrich themselves. The community will definitely not benefit from the sale
