Petition to Terminate Employment of Controversial Fellow Nathan Cofnas at the University of Cambridge

Eugenics is not ‘an opinion’. It is racism. The university cannot hide behind ‘needing to hear the other side’ or ‘impartiality in academia’ because hiring and continuing to hire this man is an act of alignment and endorsement with his views. Once again his views are not a ‘valid’ academic opinion, but bigotry and racism

I would be ashamed to be a part of a university which continually provides fellowship to such a vile individual. The university must take action on this immediately.

I am extremely concerned not only with Cofnas’ statements, but the way that the University of Cambridge is falling back on the right to freedom of speech as an excuse for this behaviour. Freedom of speech does not include false claims which are made through discrimination, hate and fallacy. The way in which Cofnas has blatantly broken the University’s statement on acts of discrimination cannot be disputed and I cannot see how he can remain as a professor and fellow here after what he has done- which many people would be instantly condemned for. He has to go.

I am signing because Nathan Cofnas is a dirty racist who needs to be taken from the university because he is an active obstacle to the educational institution that Cambridge aims to be.

this isn't freedom of speech, this is hate speech.

No place for racism, eugenics, hate speech and misleading + completely false information which endangers students and others. It’s a disgrace on the reputation of the uni and of academia in general to continue his position here

I am disgusted that the University supports and houses a blatant racist who challenges the University’s commitment to decolonising the curriculum and making students of all ethnic backgrounds feel safe in studying here. Removing him from his post sends a clear message that racist and inflammatory rhetoric will not be tolerated by this modern University of Cambridge. To keep him would show that the university is just as backwards as it is perceived to be by the country.

How can I encourage my students to go to this great university if they may end up being "taught" by a White Supremacist who distorts the facts to fit his odious ideology?

As an alumnus of the faculty of philosophy I am appalled that someone with Cofnas's explicitly stated views can be allowed to teach and research this institution. He poses a danger to Black students and colleagues and their ability to participate as respected equals in the faculty. Likewise as a trans person I would have felt discouraged and unwelcome by his views on 'transgenderism'. He and his views have no place in academia.

This man has no place in a seat of learning - his rhetoric is dangerous and reactionary.

It's disappointing to see such views coming from an institution many hold in high regard. Unsubstantiated research has no place in our society more so when it's targeting students of colour. When will people allow their minds and hearts to see the excellence in us 😔

Having racist eugenicist fellows is wild, and anybody who believes in that shit is clearly not intelligent enough to work here anyway

Freedom of speech is important, but when it infringes upon the wellbeing of Emmanuel college students it is not right. I do not attend Cambridge but I am appalled by the complete disregard shown to black students of philosophy and Emmanuel college.

I am a black Cambridge student and this entity’s views have single handedly amplified by imposter syndrome. What a disgusting, insecure thumb.

I don't want pseudo science and, more crucially, harmful racist rhetoric to be endorsed by reputable institutions.

It's appalling that such a highly respected academic establishment as Cambridge would wave through someone with such narrow, one dimensional views.

It’s a disgrace that the university and the Leverhulme trust gives platform and prestige to someone propagating such debunked and pernicious claims like Race IQ links and a Jewish super-state running the world. His ‘new racial order’ is disgusting.

Bigots like this are why I was afraid to be myself for most of my life. The fact that the University (that I work for, by the way) is tacitly validating him makes me incredibly angry.

Cofnas claims his ideas are protected by academic freedom. In reality he steals the freedom of others: of the students of colour whose work he disparages; of the transgender students whose very existence he disputes; of every scholar whom he deprives of the insights of minorities.

Emmanuel and the University must take a long, sober look at their diversity policies, and then another at his contract. Cofnas must go.

This use of derogatory terms suggests hideously poor and damaging scholarship on his part that puts at peril the relationship between the University, its Members, and wider society. Dr Sylvia Knight, Christ’s College and Churchill College.

I'm an Emmanuel member appalled by the association with this person. These ideas have no basis in science and I think their acceptance in the Philosophy Department should call into question the validity of the department.

As President of Emmanuel College MCR (the postgraduate student society), I have seen how Emmanuel College research associate Dr Nathan Cofnas's remarks online affect our student body. His arguments do not add. The racism detracts especially given that there are minority ethnic students globally. In what world do it help foster the next generation of leaders? In what world does it make a world a better place? His articles claim that he is an expert on philosophy of biology but he is not a PhD Biology. It is an insult to the scientific achievements we as a community have made. Given that he is not addressing our student body or retracting controversial statements, I believe his status at Emmanuel College should be revoked and that he is within the remit of Faculty of Philosophy exclusively.

I'm signing this petition because these views have no place in our University; our City; our Country - or anywhere else. They are plain wrong! and deeply offensive.
