Tail docking is unnecessary and cruel. A dog was given a tail for a purpose, we have not the right to mutilate just because it pleases some people.

How can you even think this is a good idea? Any stupid, half baked numpty will be able to leagally mutilate an animal. You have rocks in your head

You ought to think before making a comment. As we are keeping dogs as pets indoors they have less space to wag their tails and by hitting furniture they will actually end up with fractures and infections as a result. I used to have a Doberman with a docked tail and one with long tail. was never out of the vets with the long tailed one. same goes for ears.

However it should be performed by a vet in my opinion, and  as goes for Ireland, regulation and monitoring of breeders is far more important.

To allow a layperson to conduct such a procedure without veterinarian advice/intervention is barbaric. Tail docking is totally unnecessary and is a cruel act against a defenceless animal.

This is the 21st century, let's act like it. If the government feels so strongly about reinforcing confidence back into the people of Ireland then recognising and exercising animal rights is a good place to start. If you the government say you listen to us citizens, then prove it.

This should have ended decades ago. Disgusting practice which serves no useful purpose to the dog's function & more importantly, prevents it communicating effectively with other dogs

Unbelievable that this would be made legal. What sort of Neanderthals run this country?

I wonder if the minister has considered the huge amount of negative international publicity this will generate, hurting Ireland Inc. and probably hurting tourism and exports.

I have a rescued Jack Russell . She was two months old when she was found with her mother and four other puppies in a box. The person who left them on a motorway had docked the tails of the puppies but they were bleeding badly luckily a driver saw the box move and he saved them from being killed. Docking of tails is wrong. Maybe if we docked the tails of those putting it forward would have a different view IDIOTS

More efforts need to be made for the animals in this country its a joke the way people can get away with so much abuse!!

No ear croppings or tail docking, if they were born that way, that is God's design.. leave their natural state alone!

My dog has an exposed vertebrae  but cannot be removed as massive infection risk. I work in a vets, the amount of botched jobs we see and have to try to fix before the pup becomes toxic is getting worse. A lady was disgusted one day when I told her we would not be removing her new jack russel pups tail, she said she thought there was something wrong with the dog, that it was meant to be born with a shorter tail, that was part of the breed!

When dogs actually did what they were bred for, perhaps tail docking might have been excusable- but I doubt it.
This is cruel and unnecessary, and needs to stop.

All my life I've had dogs back home (Ireland) and now I have one here in the States too. Only 2 of my dogs back home had their tails docked before we got them. Otherwise we would have left them. But tail docking is so unnecessary and it's only for show which quite frankly, is sick. Showmanship is admiring the animal for how it naturally appears. Just leave their tails alone, the longer the tail, they more they have to wag :)
