It is high time people get over their ideal of 'beauty,' especially when it means mutilation and amputation.

When other countries are banning this unnecessary and barbaric practise, why in earth would you let untrained idiots loose to dock dogs' tails? Get into the 21st century! You should be banning the entire process, not making it easier to inflict cruelty on innocent animals. Makes me ashamed to be irish

Absolutely senseless to allow this.
THE ONLY TIME A DOGS TAIL SHOULD BE DOCKED IS FOR MEDICAL PURPOSES.

I thought this was already banned. It MUST stop. The tail is part of the dogs personality.

Legislating for such a barbaric practice is inhumane and any legislator that allows such a law to become part of our nations justice system should seriously question their own ethical belief system. We as a nation cannot allow more cruelty to occur and must not ignore this issue amidst the ups and downs in Ireland today. This is important.

This is almost unbelievable if it weren't coming from this joke of a country. Why on Earth should this be put into place?! Ireland's lack of proper laws in place (and follow through on this) for the protection and care of animals is already bad enough! Animals are often treated appallingly here but it has to be taken even further and a law with actual huge detriment to these dogs and with NO necessary reason to do so is going to actually be written into law...in 2013. The Irish government is always so concerned with how we appear internationally so ye may want to re-think this or it might blow your ultra modern and educated ruse.

dogs have a tail for a reason.for one it helps them to socialise with other dogs, it also affects the way they walk,i have had 3 old english sheepdogs over the years and only lately i have realise they do need their tails to inform other dogs to the way they are thinking.

This is a bizarre backward step in animal protection. Aside from the fact that this useless, painful procedure is purely cosmetic, allowing untrained citizens with access to neither pain meds nor a sterile working environment is asking for an increase inn infections and painful deaths in the dogs affected.

It's insane that we are even discussing this, how can any civil western country allow members of the public to legally mutate an animal for vanity reasons. It should be a crime, full stop!, It's basically legalising animal abuse.

why oh why is it necessary to dock a dogs tail in the first place let alone making it legal to do so........

Well done -- thanks so much for calling the public's attention to this issue. I can't believe that in this day and age people still think animals have no sensitivity -- it just reflects their own lack of it.

Docking is barbaric and without purpose.

There is no need for it, and the continued awful animal rights issues in Ireland are making it embarrassing to be Irish.

A dog needs their tail for communication. A vet should be the only person to perform this surgery. they are the professionals! They study for years to treat animals It is not something a member of the public should I do!

I thought that this barbarity was over when tail docking was banned except for medical reasons some years ago What insanity will now allow people without any experience - and possibly with sadistic motives - to mutilate small puppies.
