PETITION FOR URGENT ACTION TO BE TAKEN AGAINST ILLEGAL MINING IN THE CITY OF EKURHULENI

Illegal_Mining_Final.png

Illegal mining is a major concern to the residents of Ekurhuleni. It causes devastating earth tremors, and sinkholes, and destroys road infrastructure. Residents also live in fear for their safety and are constantly harassed by uncontrolled dynomite explosions and gunfights among rival mining gangs. It is the responsibility of government to ensure the health and safety of residents and the immediate environment where mining activity is concerned.

We, the residents of the City Ekurhuleni (CoE), hereby petition the Portfolio Committees for Mineral Resources and Energy, and Forestry and Fisheries, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, the Department of Home Affairs, the South African Police Services to deploy the necessary resources and capacity to deal with illegal mining in the City of Ekurhuleni. We also petition the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) to establish a multi-disciplinary task team with the latter mentioned departments and structures to develop coordinate and develop a plan to eradicate illegal mining in the City. The CoE should also engage with the relevant departments, structures, and mine owners to close, and seal abandoned and derelict mines.
