I work more than 40 hours a week, and earn less than 50 thousand rand a year as a full time working writer. It is one of the few occupations available to me to earn money, due to being disabled. It is actually a very popular employment option for disabled people, and I am far from the only disabled member of my local writing group. I find it disgraceful that the South African government wants me to earn even less by this policy. I had believed the government was trying to improve this country's unemployment problem and address low income. But this policy is doing the exact opposite. Apparently, even work that some disabled people can do, is being demonetised. It makes me question, deeply, if South Africa's government actually cares about its country's economy and the lack of jobs available, especially for people with special needs. I fail to understand how the people of South Africa will benefit by destroying yet another industry, and increasing low income and unemployment numbers. The South African government's track record in the empowerment and care of the disabled community is already under great scrutiny. To put this policy in place, is just another insult to some of the most vulnerable people in South Africa's population, forcing more disabled people to be dependant on others. Everyone should be allowed to try to live as independently as they can. Writers and artists, disabled or otherwise, should not have to beg to be paid fairly for the long hard hours they put in to make an honest living. Disabled adults are not children. We do not need to be talked down to. We have a right to work if we can. The fact that this policy puts at risk one of the most accessible occupations available to the disabled community is a disgrace.

I am a song writer and many of my friends make a living out of creative writing, arts etc. This will literally take food of their plates

(Johannesburg , 2019-03-28)

#3926

Let's say you are a great jam-maker, and you support your family by making jam that's really delicious. And government passes legislation saying that anyone who wants can come by your house and help themselves to your jam without paying you. And that they can take your jam recipes even if that's all you've got to leave your children. And that they can then resell the jam they have taken from you for free and pocket the money they make in the process. Simply because you dared to create it in the first place. Artists and writers are NOT hobbyists whose work can be splashed around because "culture should be free". We don't usually earn a lot from copyright, but it's something. It helps. For textbook writers who genuinely use this income to pay their mortgage, this is a road straight to penury, and for the SA publishing industry, already staggering financially, it is disastrous. Educational publishing (which cross-subsidizes most other publishing) will collapse.

(3610, 2019-03-28)

#3936

I am concerned about the protection of the rights of creative artists.

(Johannesburg, 2019-03-28)

(Johannesburg , 2019-03-28)

#3939

Copyright does not mean a right to copy! It means protection from copying. The ANC, to their utter criminally-ignorant shame, simply don't get this.

(Cape Town, 2019-03-28)

(Cape Town, 2019-03-28)

#3963

I disagree with the proposed amendments to the Copyright Act.

(Bloemfontein, 2019-03-28)

#3964

I'm a writer and have only recently moved into the sale of my short stories and now, a novel. This bill would hurt me on multiple fronts, harming my right to control what happens to the work I produce without fear of plagiarism from outside individuals. This law, in its current state will severely diminish the possibility that I could draw an income from my work as there little to no guarantee of protection without resorting to the courts. No independent writer has that kind of money. All I ask is that my work receive ironclad protection under the law so I can write without wondering who will be stealing it.

(Johannesburg , 2019-03-28)

#3966

All authors of any kind must be offered adequate protection on their IP and all Copyrights.

(Cape Town, 2019-03-28)

(joburg, 2019-03-28)

#3970

I'm signing because the whole publishing industry could implode if this act were to go through, especially at a time when such strong African voices are being heard in book form, depriving these authors of what would be their livelihood.

#3972

I believe that artist must be treated with respect and fairness and must be paid what is rightfully theirs

(Cape Town , 2019-03-28)

#3982

This Bill sounds terrible because it seems to sellout South African creators (writers, musicians, journalists, etc.) not just today but for decades to come. Remember who you represent before you sign this Bill into law.

(Kanehsatake Mohawk Terr., 2019-03-28)

#3983

I create content as part of my living, this bill restricts my right to provide for my family and is just plain facist.

(Midrand, 2019-03-28)

#3985

I’m signing because this law is ridiculous. You don’t even own the properties you want to license. It’s an appalling attempt to rob South Africans of the freedoms the rest of the world enjoys unless we line your pockets. You should be ashamed.

(Johannesburg , 2019-03-28)

#3990

The amendments to this Bill do not protect the rights of content creators namely, Authors, Scriptwriters, Music Composers, Fine artists, Designers, Songwriters, essentially anyone who has created an idea and this impacts our Heritage, Culture and the ultimate identity of our country. The South African creative Industry is at stake.

(Cape Town, 2019-03-28)

#3991

I am signing because I am concerned about the quality of the material which will be used. Most writers will be employees of the education department without expert skills unless this is an open market.

(Cape Town, 2019-03-28)

#3999

It affects me as a creative and does not protect my work

(Durban, 2019-03-28)
