Bariatric surgery improved my quality of life. Bariatric surgery saved my life. Saved me from depression and gave me a tool to help me improve my quality of life and it will do the same for many others with health issues.

Bariatric surgery is life saving and should not be dismissed lightly.

With a BMI of 48, I desperately need bariatric surgery to give me a chance to live a healthy, safe, happy and long life. Obesity is in fact a metabolic syndrome and in severe cases such as mine, the only thing that will have an impact on weight loss. We deserve better health, too.

This surgery has saved my life and I would like many people to have access to this lifesaving surgery regardless if they are by the means to pay for it. Please reconsider the program at Tygerberg hospital, it is vital for new patients as well as post op patients to receive their after care. I would probably not be around today if it wasn’t for this surgery. All the co-morbidities have been resolved and I have a new lease on life. Please allow many more people to be saved!

Obesity is a medical condition, just like diabetes or heart failure, etc. It is NOT caused due to a lack of willpower…

I had my bariatric surgery 2 years ago and I do not have words to explain how it changed my life and health. Pre diabetic, high blood pressure; low oxygen levels, heart problems, enlarged liver, severe painful legs, feet and knees. It should be unlawful in todays time that we know obesity is a disease to refuse people.access to this life saving operation. In a world where we know how sick obesity makes people they should.have affordable access to this lifeline. Please do not take.this away.

I've had the opportunity to have the surgery, I'm a rheumatoid arthritis patient who is now off medication because of this surgery. It is not cosmetic, it is a life saver.I'm healthier now and am able to enjoy life with my family and my family never have to worry about me having to be hospitalized due to rheumatoid flare-ups. For the first time in 20 years I feel like "me", the "me" I was always meant to be.

Obesity is a disease. People wanting or requiring bariatric surgery are looking for this
present with many co mortifies like diabetes hypertension high cholesterol which absorb tremendous amounts of revenue from the State. State doctors also nee to be educated in this type of surgery which is a path of the future.

I am 3 years post op. Lots of positive and negative experiences. More positive than negative. Life saving, eye opening, lots of tears and frustration, but happy to be able to cross my legs, to be more active without feet burning, to walk into any clothing shop and choose an item and it will fit. And many more positives, too much to say. Happy that I persevered.

I had the operation and it saved my life. It learned me to have a different relationship with food and to start living my body. My whole outlook changed and I am thankful. If it wasnt for Bariatric team and most impirtant dr Lubbe and Polly, I wouldnt have lost the 42kg until now. Im still going. I hope you can give other patients the same hope and will to live a healthy life through the program. Please reconsider as to shut this program down. Thank you. Rika Matthee

Bariatric surgery is done to help you lose extra weight and reduce your risk of possibly life-threatening weight-related health problems, including: Certain cancers, including breast, endometrial and prostate cancer. Heart disease and stroke. High blood pressure, diabetes. It literally saved my life and gave me HOPE to live a better life!

I’ve been overweight since I was 9 years old, I have been trying diet and exercise, since I was 12 years old. I have struggled all my life. I have felt like a failure for most of my life. At 43 once I weighed double my suggested body weight, I watched my bloods head towards type II Diabetes and I watched my blood pressure climb, all signs were headed towards multiple comorbidities, I started to fear dying. I struggled to sleep because of it. I would die and leave my child without a mother. The day a Dr suggested bariatric surgery, I cried and cried and cried because I felt like a failure. I wanted to do it on my own but I had to admit that I couldn’t. Finally having the surgery 7 months ago has been the single biggest life-changing thing I have done for myself. I was so scared but I put one foot in front of the other and did it, and I have never been more grateful. After spending most of my life failing and struggling, I had a tool to help me succeed and win. I sleep better, my mental health is better, I no longer fear dying, my bloods are no longer bordering on comorbidities, and I have renewed faith in my self worth. I still have a way to go but I now know I can succeed. With this tool I will succeed. I will work hard and do through all the stuggles it being but I will be successful. I have always been so proud that my government and our healthcare system have been progressive and cared enough to offer this truly life-changing surgery. It is a surgery that can avoid other surgeries because of how it changes people’s health on so many levels. It is the single most important surgery in reversing type II diabetes, just as a start. It is preventative action and I implore upon you to continue to support people who have had this surgery, and to give others the chance at life that I have had. It just makes sense.

I think this operations should be available to all for free as this was life saving for me. Not everyone has the funds for this procedure.

Lezette Basson (Villiers, Freestate, 2024-01-24)

This procedure is tool to help people who have tried everything at their disposal to loose unwanted and unhealthy fat at affordable price. Being healthy is not a privilege but a right, and in taking away that right is sentencing people to their untimely death.

Bariatric surgery should be more accessible and prioritized as one of the most dangerous non infectious disease.
Obesity requires treatment.

This surgery is life changing, some fat people are not fat by choice but by their bodies not functioning as they are meant to or as many other people in this world. We are all different and our bodies all work very differently. I eat healthy every day and make healthy choices and swim a lot but I don't lose weight, little did I know I am suffering from lymphedema, anxiety, DVT's and a autoimmune disease which is preventing me from losing weight like any other "normal person" and putting my health at an even bigger risk. When I found out last year New Year's day 2023 while in hospital with a severe thrombosis DVT about Bariatric surgery, I started doing research and realised, I have been judged for being fat my whole life and now I have a second chance at life. This surgery will help prevent all my current illnesses form exasperating and/or possibly be none existent because of this bariatric surgery. This surgery, will help many people and the government/medical aids as if we didn't have the surgery we would probably be exhausting all medical treatments and hospitalization more frequently because one cannot control your weight when you have so many illnesses fighting against your body from functioning as it should. I plea with you and the government to reconsider closing the Bariatric unit for government use, this surgery will probably save alot more government funding.

I have been on the waiting list at Tygerberg Hospital for Bariatric surgery since September 2022 & was just about to get a surgery date.
I have been struggling with my weight my entire life. My life depends on this operation. I am on medication for type 2 Diabetese, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and I have been living with severe pain daily for almost 3yrs due to Osteo Arthritis in both hips. My one hip is bone on bone and I need to lose weight in order for me to get a hip replacement. This operation is my only hope to get my life back and be able to still work. It is not a "cosmetic" surgery, or a surgery for "lazy people" or people with no will power. It is a life changing operation for people struggling with a devastating disease.
Please dont take away my only hope for a better, healthier life, as well as the hope of thousands of other people also fighting this battle every day.

I'm signing this petition because bariatric surgery is an important and viable weight loss option for those suffering the illness of obesity. I believe that some weight gain is not as a result of lack of exercise or poor diet, but of physical and medical conditions beyond human control. For these circumstances, bariatric surgery is one of the best options for guaranteed, life-saving results. In this light, I believe the programme at Tygerberg Hospital is important and therefore should not be cancelled.

I have seen people benefiting from BS surgery and defeati ng disease. I have seen people being able to walk and becoming mobile again. I am in the process of doing the procedure and the benefits are beyond measure. I am looking forward to arthritis free joints, no severe lower back pain and dropping MG on my high blood pressure meds if not totally going off.

National department of Health needs to acknowledge the value of bariatric surgery and gow it can aid towards obesity related illnesses.

Government facilites must make the surgery accessible for everyone even if the costs must be covered as a fully private (H4) patient.

Medical aids are being pennywise and pund foolish because they are paying for the consequences of obesity but are not prepared to assist their members with the tools to fix the problem
