How blessed Conway Springs is to have a teacher who cares for the character of his students, and seeks to teach them to treat others as they would be treated. I hope you do not foolishly reject that blessing in order to appease the small-minded bigots that unfortunately exist in every community.

I had a cousin who committed suicide because he feared being gay and being shunned, hated and treated like garbage. Actually he was kind, generous and compassionate and deserved to be loved and treated reverently.

I am a former student at CSMS and suffered much greif as a result of being bullied there. I only wish there were teachers who would have made an effort to address the problem during my childhood. Now a man who stood against bullying is being bullied out of a job. I just can't understand people who think blind hatred is acceptable behavior.
Really, Bueller...

I am a teacher who has gotten in trouble showing videos. One was of animated skeleton's dancing to "Danse Macabre". It was for a music class, and it was Halloween. Apparently, according to some parents, I was teaching devil worship. Sigh.

I signed the petition because I don't think teachers should be pressured to resign for asking kids to think about issues on which people actually disagree now, today. Not that I think there should be disagreement about whether gay people should be accepted. At any rate, the teacher was trying to make the world a bit more empathetic. That's a perfectly appropriate thing for teachers to do in my opinion. Which is correct.

We need more teachers like this, not less.

I signed this petition because we need far more great teachers and far fewer bigots in the world.

We need more teachers like Mr. Leahy in Kansas. Conway Springs would be foolish to let this teacher get away.

that this teacher is being harassed merely for asking his students to put themselves in the shoes of others is ludicrous! he should be given an award for this rather than trying to fire or discipline him.

Because it is the right thing to do.

Because teaching against intollerence should NOT be something we try to prevent.

stupid people need other people to point out to them that they are stupid.

For the sake of the children who need to see the real world

The teacher is teaching his students how to think critically and he is preparing them to be valuable members of our society. Few teachers actually teach today and Conway springs is lucky to have this man teaching their youth. This teacher is preparing his students to be able to live and work in the "real world."

Public schools are supposed to educate people, not turn them into "fine christian bigots." Public schools should educate. Education does not include willful ignorance as a goal.

There are now, and always have been, people who are "different" than other people, in many ways. Hate and exclusion should NOT be a goal in any endeavor.

Unless you want to start your own "Fourth Reich" or something...maybe a dystopian state where gays, muslims, blacks, hispanics, and tolerant people are placed in cattle cars and sent to camps...

Or Kansas.

I am a teacher and I support Mr Leahy in his efforts to educate students and make them confront their biases. Keep up the good work Tom

#292 Keep the Teacher. Add anti-bullying to curriculum.

2015-11-07 02:16

I grew up and went to school in a small town in Kansas. I appreciate the values but also recognize that society isn't homogenous. Teaching ideas beyond our own borders helps to expand understanding. Without teachers like this in USD#330 it is quite possible I would have disengaged as a student. Never learned about history, language, arts and science. Possibly never developed the coping skills needed to manage adversity and navigate conflict.  We need teachers and administrators who are protected from reasonable actions. Efforts to teach tolerance and reduce bullying by using a common technique, role-reversal, shouldn't be punished.  I urge you to keep this teacher and develop an anti-bullying/diversity standard.

He was teaching the core principle of nearly every philosophy and religion. Treat others as you wish to be treated. He is the kind of teacher kids need.

To support a great teacher who loves his students and his career. He's an excellent teacher we should keep.

So, effectively, the parents bullied him out of his job. Huh. Funny how that works.

I signed this petition because my teacher played silence of lambs in class and nobody forced him to resign

As a retired teacher, this is what teaching is all about. What Mr. Leahy did was admirable. What the school is doing is disgraceful. What the complaining parents are doing is.... well, I don't even want to get into that.

Because we need all the decent teachers we can get here in Ks. Our kids need them.
