Relocate and formalise the Mabodeni Informal Settlement

We the undersigned residents and businesses of Mabondeni and Elandsfontein in Ward 92,

Noting that:

1.     The Mabondeni Informal Settlement in Elandsfontein was established on Transnet land and therefore can’t be provided with permanent services such as Electricity, Water and Sanitation infrastructure.

2.     The Informal Settlement has been established on a wetland leading to high risks of flooding of both Mabondeni and Elandsfontein.

3.     The residents of the informal settlement Ilegally connect to the electricity infrastructure of Elandsfontein leading to daily electricity outages due to not having a legal supply of electricity.

4.     The establishment of this informal settlement has led to the collapse of the storm water channel running through the wetland on which it was established leading to damage to Hattingh Street, Elandsfontein as well as an overload on all infrastructure. 5.     The increased traffic in the area and the illegal electricity connections has led to damage to a number of roads in Elandsfontein including Hattingh Street, Hartebees Street and Kennis Street, Elandsfontein.

We therefore petition the Executive Mayor, Councillor Mzwandile Masina and MMC for Human Settlements Councillor Lesiba Mpya through the City of Ekurhuleni Petitions Committee to:

1.     Communicate their intentions regarding Mabondeni to residents and businesses in Mabondeni, Elandsfontein and Henville at the earliest possible opportunity.

2.     To undertake all actions necessary to resolve all issues related to Mabondeni and it’s impact on Elandsfontein and Henville.

3.     To establish a timetable to relocate Mabondeni and provide services in the interim so as to reduce the impact on surrounding areas.

4.     To undertake public participation with all affected parties in order to find solutions acceptable to all concerned.
