Unqualified or unsupervised individuals doing this work that appear to be either clueless or disinterested. Surely common sense would alert someone in the water affairs department.

To Whom It May Concern,

We, the concerned residents of the residential area adjoining the Umgeni River Pump Station, submit this petition to address a pressing issue that affects our community’s well-being and the environment. For many years, this picturesque area alongside the Umgeni River has been a place of solace and enjoyment, serving as a voluntary retreat for residents and their four-legged companions. Regrettably, the prevailing conditions pose a grave threat to the safety of our children and the well-being of our animals, given the heavily polluted waters that now permeate the surroundings.

Our demand is simple yet imperative: we insist that immediate action be taken to upgrade and modernize the existing sewerage system to meet the escalating demands imposed upon it over the past two decades. Our community has witnessed numerous developments approved by the local council during this time, yet the vital upgrades required to the sewer system have been noticeably absent. This has resulted in a system that has reached its capacity and can no longer adequately serve our needs.

We, as conscientious citizens, bear a substantial financial burden for the provision of sanitation and water services. In return, we assert our right as consumers and human beings to safeguard the purity of our rivers and to expect the establishment of a managed and efficient sewerage system.

We implore the relevant authorities to take immediate action, allocating the necessary resources and expertise to ensure the Umgeni River Pump Station is not only operational but is also capable of meeting the growing demands of our community. Let us not overlook the long-term environmental implications, where the health and vibrancy of our ecosystem are at stake.

In conclusion, we request your unwavering support in addressing this pressing issue. Our community’s health, safety, and the preservation of our cherished environment are at the heart of this petition. We look forward to a timely response and, more importantly, to witnessing the necessary actions that will result in a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for all residents.

Sincerely,

Jen Smit (Howick, 2023-10-21)

It is completely unacceptable that it has been allowed for raw, untreated sewage to leak into the soil and river. This sort of environmental pollution wreaks havoc on natural ecosystems, nevermind the associated health issues.

uMgungundlovu District Municipality cannot be allowed to let service delivery be so dysfunctional. They have a duty to ensure that proper infrastructure is in place and that the ratepayers have clean water. They must be held accountable for their failures

Shaun Curran (Howick, 2023-10-22)

The continued lack of attention to an urgently required permanent solution to basic infrastructure problems as well as the total disregard to the long term effect on the environment and the many people who share it.

The pollution is harming the habitat and all animals that live there. The pollution had increased even after clean up projects have taken place. This is an area that thives with wildlife, birds, insects etc is not only unacceptable but a disgrace.

I live along the river and have had many years of my children and others enjoying it. There are hundreds of school kids that need to cross the river to get to school, and on hot days enjoy the river. Would hate it if they got sick or worse

I believe we need to protect the precious asset the Mgeni River we in Howick are privileged to enjoy as citizens of the town. We as the citizens of Howick need to ensure the quality of the water of the river is protected for the health and quality of life of 1) current citizens of Howick
2) visitors to Howick
3) our natural heritage in and around the river such as animal life, birds, fish and vegetation
4) all citizens of KZN living alongside and using the water from the river and the natural environment in and surrounding the river downstream from Howick all the way to the Indian Ocean.

The construction of the sewerage pit on a conservancy wetland was a complete waste of public funds and ecologically irresponsible. Until such time that there is a real solution that is affordable, the logical interim solution would be to run a (cheap) PVC pipe from the pump house overflow straight to the river. The overflow already ends up there anyway and a pipe would protect the wetland from becoming a sewerage swamp as it was before the current slimes dam was created. It’s not an ideal situation to overflow dump sewerage into the river but it’s a better solution than the current mess.
