Parents don't want to spend time with their kids.

I for one can't wait for a longer summer with my kids!

I agree with this person as well...Who wants to do something when its freezing outside! Summer time you can do everything and anything.

I don't understand why they give us the opportunity to vote for something and then just do what they want anyway.

The School Board lost all credibility,
except for those few members who didn't
vote positively, on changing the school
calendar for next year...the Balanced
Calendar has so many "positives" and was
to remain in effect for a minimum of
three years. The total moral of school
staff and support members is very discouraging.

"I want my tenure on the school board to be very collaborative. It is time to mend the relationship that the board has with the community, with our teachers, with our legislators and with parents. With their input, we will be better prepared to deal with the challenges we currently face in Cobb County - and those that may come our way in the future."

It is very strange that we were AGAIN encouraged, by the school board to participate in a survey, and then the results were completely ignored.

The most ignorant response I have seen yet.  It has NOTHING to do with my desire to spend time with my kids.  Good Grief!!

You are elected officials who are supposed to represent the majority, and you didn't. You asked us to vote on this, we did, and you didn't listen to the results. We want the school year to start on August 1st. The people have spoken.

I just watched the Schoolboard Mtg. of 2/17/11 on Educ. TV last night. I can't believe the total disregard some of the members of this Board have for the preferences of their constituents. They are on a "Power High"!

#236 Give this calander a try

This calander was orginally for 3 years. Cobb County needs to give this calander a try before they chose not to listen to the majority,

#237 Re: Change the Calendar Back To The Balanced Calendar

2011-02-21 19:39

When a school calendar is adopted for 3 years, it should not be able to be changed. It should not have been an option for this current board. Four of the board members, who did not respect the will of the parents in the survey, deserve to lose their positions. It is arrogant and irresponsible to assume that as an elected official you hold no responsibility to the people you represent.

This is now so much more than a calendar issue. The parents, students and employees of Cobb County have now discovered that we are dealing with 4 power hungry tyrants who have their own agenda and care very little about improving our school system. They are actually trying to turn the community against the teachers! How does that help our school system?
I teach in Cobb County and I can tell you this issue has put morale at an all time low. Teachers in Cobb are not unionized,we don't have collective bargaining, we have had a salary cut over the last several years, we have been furloughed, RIFed, our class sizes and work loads have been increased, we use our own money to buy school supplies and what are you upset about? Teachers in Cobb want to have a schedule that allows us and our students to be at our best and in the classroom as much as possible. I think the taxpaying citizens of Wisconsin would think that you're pretty lucky to have us!

#243 What are we teaching?

2011-02-21 22:05

We teach our students and our own children that they have a voice, that their vote counts, and that they can make a difference when they participate in the decisions that affect their communities and their lives. Then our elected school board takes a survey and demonstrates to us and the younger members of our community that lobbyists for companies such as Six Flags truly have more of an impression on our elected representatives than we do. Not acceptable.

The August 1st calendar should be in place for the 2011-2012 school year. I'm incredibly disappointed that four members of the Cobb County Board would vote to change it after input given by the majority of parents, students and teachers supports the current calendar.

FYI - the petition for Aug. 15th has been taken down. I think they realized that the fact that they couldn't even get 40 people to sign it was proving our point.

#246: Cobb teacher -

All the signatures were from the same IP (if you go to the statistics tab you can see this info).  I was not sure what that meant so I asked them in the discussions.  The petition came down quickly after I posted the question.  I guess it wasn't good.
